I find it really hard to understand why people think that this book has any hint of divine wisdom in it.

Starting from Genesis, let's look at some absurd things in the Bible that are indicative of the intelligence level of the author.

God likes to wrestle? If he's losing, he'll break your leg.
Where is a leg broken in this passage?

25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

Hi GoodK

Is a dislocated hip equivalent to a broken leg? I don't think that your comment is correct.

Whether he dislocated his leg or broke it, I think the meaning of the passage is relatively unchanged.

I agree but you're the one who wrote "break your leg". In this passage, Jacob wrestled with God and his character was changed. What do you object to in the passage. Do you think that God, if He exists, would not be concerned with men? Is the wrestling story too prosaic for your tastes? Or it something else?

You're nitpicking, Richard. I've seen you to do much better.

I don't "object" to the passage for the same reason I don't object to Harry Potter. It is fiction. There is nothing to object to. The point is, there is no reason to believe God had anything to do with this book. At all.

Sorry to offend you but when discussing a text, it's nice to start out by getting the obvious details right.
