I’ve found Mormon Stories to be the exact opposite of a silo of information. Hundreds and hundreds of guests have given their honest opinion of Mormonism. Hundreds of scholars, historians, faithful Mormons, questioning Mormons, critics.

If one needs a place to start to untangle Mormonism, Mormon Stories is it.

Jacob Hansen is just another apologist talking head. Saying the same things that the rest of them say. It’s tired, old, and uninteresting.
Hey all, told you that's what we'd hear. Nothing to see here... I just didn't know the 'come back' would be THAT fast. ;) Don't be swayed by the dark side.

Mormon Stories has its place. So does Thoughtful Faith.

Now that MG has stormed out of the room, I'll give my impressions of the video. I found it to be pretty standard Jacob Hansen fare, with a lot of unfounded assertions and a full metric ton of pseudo-intellectual namedropping. He started out by throwing his older brother under the bus and went downhill from there. His message can be summed up by saying that no one has any business leaving the Church until they're at least as smart as he is. And nobody is as smart as he is.

This bit toward the end was pretty typical:

"Do you know the arguments of Thomas Aquinas, Blaise Pascal, George MacDonald, William Dembski, Stephen Meyer, Alvin Plantinga, WilliamLane Craig, Jordan Peterson, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton? Could you summarize the top arguments from each of these people? If you were to have read and fully understand the primary arguments made by all the people I just mentioned, and still you found Jeremy Runnell's CES letters strong enough to pull down your belief in God and Jesus, I would be shocked."

I find this posturing hilarious.

At about minute 29, Hansen flashed a photo of Edvard Munch's 1906 painting of Friedrich Nietzsche. I kind of liked that. However, he went on to associate it with meaninglessness and Nihilism, so he can go to hell. Neither did he bother to mention the either the painting or the artist's names, which I also thought was kind of dickish.

Ha! Disparaging Nietzsche and Munch like that, it's no wonder that Jacob didn't have enough credibility with his siblings to convince them to stay Mormon.

Nice try. Morley is on the hook.
No one is on the hook. No one is obligated to justify their opinions to you. No one is obligated to answer your questions, respond to your tantrums, reply to your robochats, or watch your videos.

You either inspire folks to do that or you don't. Attempts at bullying generally just makes folks turn away.

Seemingly...it doesn't work both ways. If I don't answer questions. If I don't respond to people bellyaching about the church. If I hadn't responded to your own robochat...I would have been called out. And have in the past. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Tantrums? Do I hear a bit of whining there? I'm suggesting that people watch Jacob Hansen's presentations without having been influenced unduly by naysayers.

Glad you showed up!

What were your thoughts in regards to the inverted pyramid? Why do you think that many people who leave the church also, by default it seems, leave God? If God is first, Jesus is second, then other things are more likely to fall in line. If God isn't in the picture, then neither is Jesus..and then by default the church cannot be true. When Jacob reconstructed his faith after a faith crisis he found that God was at the foundation. Belief in a creator. I think this is a point that ought to be deeply entertained and considered without being tossed aside. I think that too many people don't have a firm foundation with God before their faith issues/crisis having to do with Joseph Smith and the foundations of the LDS Church. Can I prove that to be true? No. Except for the fact that so many leave God and Jesus in the dust when they leave the church. It's almost as if they didn't already have that connection. That's not everyone...but it's not a few.

Thanks for your response. I didn't "storm out of the room". It simply looked like the room was empty of any further thought beyond the "back to the topic' shenanigans from one of our illustrious posters. ;)

You are the one who initially said, "I imagine that the viewing of Hansen's Youtube presentations was what convinced them to leave. The weak apologetics that dominate the discourse these days are more damning to the Church than any critic ever was." That set the tone. I decided that another note ought to be found in the score. A.I. went on to sort of rip up your initial response. It was kind of fun to hear the two A.I.'s duke it out though, don't you think? What a world.

Balance, man, balance. :)

Okay. I'll go with 'it works both ways.' Now it's your turn to review the video and write up why you think it makes the case that Jacob's siblings should stay.

I can't make the argument that they should stay. They need to do what is best for themselves. If one can't move forward in faith they need to re-calibrate.

I'm sure Jacob is sorry to see them leave though. I'll bet that he prays that they will come back some day. In the meantime, like he said, love should and does conquer all.

That’s okay. There’s need for you to do anything but post your A.I. when the urge hits.
