Re: Russian Invasion of Ukraine

You think having a country completely cut off from the rest of the world isn't going to prove crippling over time?
How long do you expect it will take see any results from these sanctions? Right now it just looks like Putin is calling the West's bluff. Russia is already a 2nd world country. Do you think Putin gives a rip about economic prosperity in Russia. Do you think Fidel Castro gave a rip about the standard of living in Cuba?
Just look at Cuba after 60 years of economic blockage. They're still driving 57' Chevys.
Are you calling that a success? All that did was create a bunch of impoverished people suffering under communist oppression and importing their poverty to the US for over 60 years. And the communists are still in power, which is what you and Obama wanted anyway.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Hey Res, wouldn't it seem to be an adequate punitive measure by the global community if Russia were to have their veto power stripped, or even maybe be kicked out of the UN? Is that feasible, or even possible?
I don't know if that can even happen. I haven't looked at the Charter in ages. The veto was originally a feature, not a bug, in that the permanent security council members could never have their sovereignty interfered with against their will. Without it, I doubt the U.S. would have ever joined the U.N. And if it was done to Russia, I'm not sure the U.S. would stay in, as it could happen to us.

If the U.S. is going to be an effective peacekeeper, I think the veto would have to go. The permanent security council members could stay, with the temporary members rotating in and out. But removal of the veto would allow for more pressure one of the major powers like Russia that isn't possible today.
Res, I'm curious about your take on the potential effectiveness of these sanctions. Not in terms of stopping Putin from being Putin, but in terms of doing devastating harm to Russia's economy. I cannot help but think of the sad situation the Cuban people are in because of not only being led by a ruthless dictator, but also the economic sanctions put in place on their country decades ago.

In 2001, Biden Was “Amazed” At Putin’s Move Towards The West, Compared Him To Peter The Great

Not much spirit of discernment, huh?

Says the guy who is dumb enough to assert Putin really gives a rip who is US President when attacking another country. Putin has never attacked the USA, but Islamic Terrorists have, and they did it with a Republican in office. If a Democrat said this is because they sensed "weakness" in Bush I'd call them an idiot too.
Are you calling that a success?
Yes. Do you even know what Cuba's military capabilities are these days? Your band of idiot insurrectionists could probably storm their beaches.

With Russia cut off from semiconductors and the latest technology which they mostly import, it is going to have a devastating effect on their ability to retain a "world class" military. No one saying it will happen over night, but it will happen. The world needs to send a message that it will not tolerate this kind of aggression. That we have learned lessons from WWII.

I doubt it, I don't think Putin is stupid.
You're not the only western voter out there who has no understanding of people like Putin, Kim Jong Un, Ayatolla Khomeni, Mao Zadong. In fact I'm not sure western voters could understand people like this even if they wanted to. And yet, our political decisions have created results like this, where an Obama one liner in a debate that was completely false, served to help him win the election of 2012. I hate Mitt Romney, but I have a hard time believing that election wasn't the beginning of the end for the USA.

Ah yes, Brietbart tells you to post this today so you do. So what's your point? Once upon a time, more than two decades ago, Biden spoke favorably of Putin because he appeared to be moving towards Democracy.

Today, Trump praises Putin just this week because he is slaughtering thousands of his own people.

But they're the same thing right?

Just another example of Brietbart's fake news.

[personal attack deleted -cp-]. Romney is a moron at times but he's genuinely a good person with good intentions. He lost that election because he went to a private dinner and told his millionaire donors that half of America doesn't want to better their lives, that they want government to give them everything, and that there is no way to win those people.

The world needs to send a message that it will not tolerate this kind of aggression.
The world will not do it. Western Europe is dependent on Russian petroleum and natural gas thanks to environmentalism.

That we have learned lessons from WWII.
We forgot the lessons from WWII a long time ago. The west is all about appeasement now, just as they were with Hitler.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

E.U. will unveil a strategy to break free from Russian gas, after decades of dependence

You need to expand your reading beyond that crap at Brietbart. At least you could try to keep up.

Perhaps in the mind of a democratic socialist like you and your buddy Rafael Warnock, Fidel Castro was a good person. Is that why you don't like Putin anymore, because he abandoned his communist roots?

Romney is a moron at times but he's genuinely a good person with good intentions.
Not at all what you said back in 2012. He was a high school bully, dog killing, plutocrat who was in the words of our current commander in chief going to put black people back in chains again.
He lost that election because he went to a private dinner and told his millionaire donors that half of America doesn't want to better their lives, that they want government to give them everything, and that there is no way to win those people.
He lost that election because he was nothing more than controlled opposition to the mainstream media Democrat political machine. Obama ran a sleazy Chicago negative campaign and Romney refused to hit back. And he was right about the 47%. That's part of why he lost as well.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.
