If Smith could beat all challengers in the game of stick pull, then leaping over logs while toting 50 lb plates should be no problem.

Also, wasn’t stick pull the same game he liked to play with the ladies?

It always struck me as convenient that Joseph's assailants, on his alleged trip home with the plates, were considerate enough to only attack in ones and to do so at spaced out intervals each patiently waiting their turn along the exact route he was taking. Almost like it was a scripted...

The claim that actors were running any distance with a 30-35 lb weight in their hands seems... well, I remember one young guy who looked to be in good shape trying this on Youtube. He didn't get very far. Perhaps a BYU track star could be encouraged to run around the football stadium track 12 times. Forget the rough terrain and logs, that would be far too dangerous.

Couldn't find the original video, so here is a substitute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08wRRff8x0k

Have you ever carried a kettle bell or some other weight for a workout? What they said happened isn’t ever happening.

We would be remiss to leave BC Space out of this conversation. Remember he could carry 60 lbs in one of his arms and fight off attackers with his free hand and legs and run 3 miles with barely breaking a sweat.

I enjoy how the story came from Joseph Smith without any witnesses. He came home huffing and puffing, with his golden plates in tow, and boy, did he have a yarn to share with his adoring family. Some might wonder on the stories veracity on that alone. Samuel was like "let me see that set of plates. How could you have run from bad guys while carrying it".

"uh well, Jesus says you can't tough them. And besides to see them is only reserved for those whom God tells me can see them."

That was probably the first time his brother beat him up.

"I'll lick you good next time, Sam. You had the advantage of catching me after I just battled with bad guys while running 3 miles with this heavy load. I'm the toughest...not you."

Why didn’t the would-be assailants chase Joseph home? Surely it would be relatively simple to keep up with a bloke hampered by such a weight?

I feel a little bad for Peterson. All the money he raised for this venture has gone to the feature film producers and distributors, with very little to the non-union low wage actors. Meanwhile, he has introduced a new website, 'Witnesses Undaunted', where the trailer for the educational materials STILL has scenes from previous movies in it, no music, and old and ill-produced interviews and scenes. Additionally, the documentary trailer still has Joseph Smith swinging the plates at the head of an attacker, while the movie (the part of the story where the money was spent) now has Joseph Smith fighting off an attacker with a rifle. So, which is it? Not only that, but according to Peterson, he already had a contract with BYU to include his materials in the religious studies curriculum, reaching tens of thousands of students, as he put it, BUT he still was convinced to hand over an extra $200k to distributors for 'placement.'

I still think Peterson and his 1 million plus dollars' worth of investors are getting a little shafted in this process.

A little self-defensive snark keeps the doubts at bay:
dCyl

In fairness, it's quite possible the critics are physically unable to carry 50 pounds themselves.

And of course, the incomparable gemli:

I suspect that the actual plates were a lot lighter, given that they didn't exist. I myself have run with nonexistent objects weighing as much as 83 pounds, and I was not slowed down in the least.

gemli: "they didn't exist"

The historical evidence that they existed is overwhelming. But gemli disdains historical evidence, and his dogmatic assertions have never been slowed down by that disdain in the least.

There is no historical evidence as such, so to call what evidence does exist as "overwhelming" is to make the word meaningless. There is a single story of an incredible event with spiritual beings and golden plates, but there is no evidence for any of these things that would actually certify their existence. The attestations of people who were in on the game, and who did not see angels or directly view or handle golden plates, are the opposite of evidence.

I'm not picking on your religion in particular, because every religion begins with the same kind of story. You'd think that angelic beings and gods who are eager to spread a message of salvation and routinely appear to all and sundry would do a better job of it. The fact that not a scrap of real evidence exists for any of these claims should suggest that gods and angels are human surrogates that we invent. But ordinary humans who were monkeys 10 minutes ago on the evolutionary timeline might be inclined to personify their own desire not to die and invent such stories for fun, and more than anything else, profit. If a real god wanted people not to die, we wouldn't die. Period. But religions don't make that claim, for obvious reasons. Only claims that cannot possibly be examined or certified to be true are at the heart of every religion. There is no tangible evidence, and there never will be.

Myth is misused by the powerful to subjugate the masses all too often.
