LDS garments are merely a symbol of our covenants with God. In a sense, wearing them is much like wearing a cross or a yarmulke. Unfortunately, this symbolism has gotten confused with magic protection, much like the cross being thought to ward off vampires. This magic protection is a superstition. Cotton, polyester and nylon are fabrics for clothing that do not have any mystical powers.

Not wearing garmies while exercising makes no sense

So many ordinary things take on a life of their own in Mormon culture.
White shirts, G's, earrings, tea and coffee... it's all foolishness.
Garments are no different than any other underwear. They are not going to protect against harm; they can be washed with other similiar colors; they can be on the floor without the world stopping. Going to bed without them will not result in loss of blessings, and going to bed with them on will not result in blessings being bestowed. Wearing them during menstruation will not result in loss of blessings. Wearing them will not result in a win, and not wearing them will not result in a loss.
This whole culture thing has gotten so out of control, it's downright stupid. Anytime someone stands up in conference and says men need to wear white shirts when performing priesthood ordinances, and I just want to throw something at the podium. How stupid, to try to tie God's hands! As if he couldn't bless someone, just because the guy with the oil is wearing a blue shirt! Stupid, stupid, stupid! No wonder people think we're weird and ridicule us. We're so concerned about outward appearances, we lose track entirely of what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.
White shirts don't matter. G's on or off don't matter. Wear them or don't, but quit obsessing about them. Were you kind to strangers today? Did you practice the Golden Rule today? Did you love your spouse with all your heart today? Did you hug your kids today? How the hell can anyone worry about clothing and earrings, when the world is full of violence and pain, a lot of it right here on our doorsteps? If we are so concerned about clothing and earrings, instead of about helping our neighbors and feeding the poor, then we have FAILED as a church, we have failed as priesthood holders, we have failed as a people. We are under condemnation and IT'S OUR OWN FAULT!

Hey Harmony,
I would certainly join a church that actually focused on the teachings you suggest; no need for the nonsense.

Have you considered that the world might have less violence and pain if people followed prophetic counsel and had only one earring per ear? Think about it. ;-)
