If the Prophet Joseph Smith believed the Book of Mormon
was the word of God given directly to him in order to bring about the restoration of the early Christian Church, the true word of God. Why did he try to sell the copyright to the Book of Mormon?

On this issue its important to remember why Joseph was not allowed to get the plates from the Hill Cumorah for a number of years. On his initial try he was shocked, and forbidden until he was ready.
Joseph was a treasure hunter at one point, and he had to cleanse his heart of this desire before he was permitted to translate.
Apparently he had a relapse.
You read "Rough Stone rolling" Jersey, what did oyu think of what was said concerning the explanation given?

Why would he need to hold on to it? He has the priesthood and the church.

Huh? I don't believe you answered the question I asked, or did I miss that? Of what relevance is Joseph Smith having the priesthood and the church to his attempt to sell the copyright to the foundational scripture of that church?

yeh, selling the copyright would have been really bad, for alot of reasons. Joseph was way wrong to try it, and I'm sure the Spirit left him for a time afterwards. I have no doubt there was punishment involved from the Lord.

According to accounts that I've read, Joseph attempted to sell the copyright to the Book of Mormon in Canada because he was moved to do so on account of revelation. Essentially that the Spirit moved him to do so. How does that fit in with your idea that the Spirit would surely leave him for a time afterwards?

Does someone own the copyrights for the Bible? I believe there are several churches that operate quite well without a copyright.

Spiritual shams
The work of evil spirits was so prevalent during the period in which the church was being re-established that a revelation was given concerning the discerned. Instructing the Elders of the Church the Lord said:
D&C 50:2-4
2 Behold, verily I say unto you, that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world.
3 And also Satan hath sought to deceive you, that he might overthrow you.
4 Behold, I, the Lord, have looked upon you, and have seen aabominations in the church that profess my name.
and further:
9 Wherefore, let every man beware lest he do that which is not in truth and righteousness before me.
the Lord desired that there be a pattern and standard of judgement on these matters
D&C 52:14-19
14 And again, I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived; for Satan is abroad in the land, and he goeth forth deceiving the nations—
15 Wherefore he that prayeth, whose spirit is contrite, the same is accepted of me if he obey mine ordinances.
16 He that speaketh, whose spirit is contrite, whose language is meek and edifieth, the same is of God if he obey mine ordinances.
17 And again, he that trembleth under my power shall be made strong, and shall bring forth fruits of praise and wisdom, according to the revelations and truths which I have given you.
18 And again, he that is overcome and bringeth not forth fruits, even according to this pattern, is not of me.
19 Wherefore, by this pattern ye shall know the spirits in all cases under the whole heavens.
That these revelations came through inquiry on Josephs part is without question. Obviously he needed guidance to know what was of God, and what wasn't.

Would it be out of the realm of possibility for you to answer the questions I asked? What relevance is Joseph Smith having the priesthood and the church to attempt to sell the copyright to the foundational scripture of that church? As I recall it was you who injected the concepts of the priesthood and the church as relevant to the discussion. Could you answer the questions?

Since he wrote it, I would suppose he had copyrights.
Still doesn't answer the question. Why would he try to sell it?
Having found no treasure, I'm guessing it would have been a quick way to make a few bucks. I wonder if did manage to find a buyer, would he have washed his hands to the whole thing?
