Anyone seen the movie Tommy?

Post by _Sam Harris »

I just happened to come across it on Turner Classic Movies. I caught it in the middle, but it's weird/intriguing/almost disturbing.

What is this genre of movie? I looked the movie up on the net trying to figure out what it is, and I learned this was a rock opera in record form first...

Has anyone seen A Clockwork Orange? That movie was interestingly disturbing as well.

Are there other movies out ther that were made during the 70s like these two?

Tommy... I was sitting here thinking there is some kind of music connection there. I had to look it up. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073812/

I haven't seen it, but I love all things 70's and The Who and Elton John? Going to have to check it out!!! Eric Clapton plays a preacher!? Awesome.

"See me, feel me, touch me, heal me"...Tommy was indeed a rock opera (the first of it's kind) recorded by The Who. If I am not mistaken, Elton John plays the Pinball Wizard in the movie.

I'm sure you can get Tommy on CD. What else are you looking for? What about Hair (late 60's) not necessarily disturbing yet fitting for the time period. Rocky Horror Picture Show is on DVD I think. Now, that's disturbing! Looking for evidence of the drug culture? What about Woodstock? Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones...a film about the infamous concert at Altamont Speedway where *Hells Angels served as security and a person was murdered during the performance of "Sympathy for the Devil". Or are you just looking for wigged out psychedelic stuff?

Show of hands:

Which version of Pinball Wizard is better? Elton Johns or the Who's ?

The Who. No contest.

Trivia: The Who was the opening act for the first and only Stones concert I attended.

I don't know why anyone thinks this is disturbing.

by the way, that's Roger Daltrey (as Tommy) to the left of Clapton.

Anyone who says Elton John gets a cyber smack. The album version isn't the best either. The best versions (while shorter) are the live versions to be found on albums such as "Live at Leeds" and "Live at the Isle of Wight". That being said, all the versions are a whole lot better than anything to be found today.

Edit: I did like the piano instead of acoustic guitar by John.
