Good can come out of just about anything, I suppose.
Perhaps you are correct. So let's be friends and discuss things politlely. I know you are not stupid, but you sure can be mean.
The fact that you have taken an immense tragedy and turned it into an excuse to attack exmormons makes you exactly like the exmormon bogey-man you live with in your mind. In fact, the bogey-man is YOU. You have just put a mask on the bogey-man out of fear.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

You are being extraordinarily offensive. I live very near Va Tech - many of my former students attend this school. One of my daughter's exboyfriends, with whom she remains very close, attends the school. My best friend's daughter attends this school. My first thought, when I saw the news at lunchtime, was that any of these children may be dead.
And you come on this thread and turn it into an excuse to attack exmormons?
And you see nothing wrong with that behavior?
What a sad commentary on your morality.

Could it be that there might be a few small problems with the way our modern societies are set up? There's only so many times you can trot out the 'lone nut' theory before it becomes apparent that there's a social mechanism which is actually producing these 'lone nuts'. They're not exactly 'lone' anymore, are they?
Beastie, please pardon me for saying that a society which produces people like this is not a society to which I look for moral guidance.
It is not society. It is people who do this that are plain nuts and/or evil. The kid was disturbed of course. So are millions of others who do not murder 32 innocents. Lay the blame at the killers feet. There have been murderers and phsycos since man has walked the earth.
Jason, I have to disagree. We cannot keep simply dismissing these people as 'lone nuts'. We have to face the fact that certain societies regularly produce these people, whereas other societies do not. There have been murderers and psychos since man has walked the earth, but they are a lot more common in some areas than in others. Serial killers as we know them are a modern urban phenomenon which is less than 150 years old. Believe it or not, there are countries on this planet in which no child has to go to a school with metal detectors and armed security guards. Any society which has reached that stage is seriously sick.

Yes, no child has to go through metal detectors in Cuba.

Could you at least try and make a relevant comment on a serious intelligent thread such as this? You complain regularly about the alleged lack of serious dialogue on this forum, and yet when a thread is started in which exactly that kind of dialogue is under way you seem incapable of contributing effectively to it.

Of course there are social forces operating on different aspects of the situation. The more obvious kinds are, what produces, or shapes, "lone nuts", such as bad family life or problems in school. But a second kind, is what helps determine what a "lone nut" will do.
There are a million easily imagined counterfactuals to what you might have done in life but when it really comes down to it, there are far fewer things you really would have done, a lot based on what other people have done. So for instance, if school shootings were non existent, had no one ever done one yet, and if there had been no terrorism in recent years, would this guy have been the first to do this kind of massacre? I'm not so sure. So similar past actions and media coverage I'd wager play a significant role.
The more I see and hear about this guy on the news, the more I see that he was deeply disturbed.
This guy really was a lone nutjob. How many different people expressed concern over this guy to those in authority? Plenty it sounds like, and no one did enough apparently. He was turned over to a mental hospital, but not checked in, and since he wasn't commited he slipped through the cracks and was able to purchase firearms.
This guy was an aberration. This entire occurance was a freak incident. A horrible, tragic, freak incident. No one is to blame except for this individual who refused to make friends or find love despite repeated attempts by those around him. This guy had roomates who tried to be friendly and talk to him, and he refused. He had parents and siblings and teachers that he refused to draw close to, he was sick and twisted and no one could do anything to help him.
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. - Plato

Yeah I thought it was funny he's ranting against rich kids when his sister was going to Princeton and he's getting a college education at Va Tech. It's not like he had a bad life...his parents were together and he was going to have a college education. I'm usually sympathetic to people with mental illnesses...but he refused mental health treatment (which he had many chances to get). I think he was just a twisted guy who enjoyed wallowing in his twisted little world.
