Looking for a quote!

Post by _Bryan Inks »

Please help with this one.

I recall reading a quote from someone in the Church Heirarchy that talks about intellectuals being the ones who have issues with the Church or something along those lines.

I know that this quote exists, but I can't remember who or where, nor can I find it.

Thanks in advance.

Here's some stuff from Packer:

It is so easy to be turned about without realizing that it has happened to us. There are three areas where members of the Church, influenced by social and political unrest, are being caught up and led away. I chose these three because they have made major invasions into the membership of the Church. In each, the temptation is for us to turn about and face the wrong way, and it is hard to resist, for doing it seems so reasonable and right.

The dangers I speak of come from the gay-lesbian movement, the feminist movement (both of which are relatively new), and the ever-present challenge from the so-called scholars or intellectuals. Our local leaders must deal with all three of them with ever-increasing frequency. In each case, the members who are hurting have the conviction that the Church somehow is doing something wrong to members or that the Church is not doing enough for them.

That helps, but it isn't the one I'm thinking of.

I want to say that it was early Church Leadership and the gist of the message was that (paraphrasing) "intellectuals are the enemy of Faith/God" and "they [intellectuals] will question themselves into being enemies of the Church".

I'm still looking, myself, so any other help is appreciated.

I know President Packer gave a speech entitled, "The Mantle is Far Greater than the Intellect". I have always wondered however if that meant the responsibility was far greater than the available brain power. If so, that would have a lot of ramifications.
