Wikipedia and DCP....I guess it was going to happen

Post by _Bond...James Bond »

Alright I know someone will change it...so I'm making a post on it now. As of right now DCP's wiki page currently says...and I quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_C._Peterson

Daniel C. Peterson is professor of Islamic Studies and Arabic in the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University and currently serves as editor-in-chief of BYU's Middle Eastern Texts Initiative. He is a member of the executive council of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University. He received a bachelor's degree in Greek and philosophy from BYU and, after several years of study in Jerusalem and Cairo, earned his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of California at Los Angeles. His hobbies include fishing, snorkeling, surfing, and frequenting the "Recovery from Mormonism" Board.

I thought it was funny...but that's just me.

Why does he need to be on Wikipedia? There are plenty of people in this world who have far more to be proud of than he, who are not on there.

All he has is his loudness. Why does that merit an entry into Wikipedia? Can't folks go on there and submit corrections and observations about the things submitted? Wait a minute! If we don't sugar-coat what is said about him, he'll get his lawyer and sue.

Anybody can edit Wiki....there have been some real fights over some pages (check out the discussion on the Exmormonism page...) But you get some really weird stuff from time to time by people messing with wiki articles. A couple of examples:

1) The Mel Gibson page (which I was checking to see when one of his movies came out) one day simply said. "Mel Gibson hates Jews!". That's all it said.

2) One day I was reading the Adrian Brody page (the Pianist Oscar winner for Best Actor) and it was fine except for one line in the middle of it that concerned "Diet Coke cans", "shoving" and "his butt" (with quite a few more colourful adjectives inbetween). I find these little things somewhat funny because of the chance that someone will cut and paste something from wiki into a term paper...with obvious results.

To get back to the point....anyone can edit Wiki and apparently DCP has a fan or two who are wiki editors (and a few detractors too) so they can start (and edit) a page about anyone.

It's just another reason to post under a pseudonym. DCP claims people can tell it's him from the way he writes, and this is probably true, but at least there's plausible deniability and less of a chance somebody will insert a wikipedia entry about your online habits.

Frankly, I find the bit about him surfing to be highly implausible.

That's because you are associating it with "fishing, snorkeling" instead of "frequenting the Recovery from Mormonism board." If you look at it the other way, web surfing makes a whole lot of sense. :)

Alright...it's been updated to this.

He is a doughnut fanatic and is incredibly gifted in the art of "Worthiness Interviews". He especially enjoys polishing his rose colored glasses.

I'm betting this article gets shutdown to edits pretty soon.

It doesn't specify which type of donuts. This can be crucial information for future historians. What about the Great Peterson-Scratch Imbroglio? There is no mention of it, nor Mormon Discussions.

I know...but it wasn't me that did the editing. I just saw it at RfM...I bet it's someone from there.
