No. This isn't my "personal definition." It's just common parlance. The reason I asked her to google it is for her to get a taste of its common usage. The notion that the dictionary determines proper use of words is called "prescriptivism." It is near universally thought of as wrong-headed in academia. For very good reasons. It's funny that DCP gets mocked for merely defending that notion.

In any case, it sounds like you may have a skewed perception of the make-up of MDB posters. The thread I mentioned in my earlier post really is a nice way to acquaint yourself with the dichotomy of some of the folks here.

How did you hear about us?

I didn't think "Juliann" or "Daniel" when I first started reading the Light person. I thought "Charity".

Well, whether "Light" is Juliann, Daniel, Charity, or someone new, again...Welcome to the board.

Stay a while!

LOL

Well, what you don't know about that conversation (if you aren't, in fact, DCP) is that despite Dan's comments, he wanted to use all kinds of dictionaries to support the definition of a word he agreed with and throw out any that didn't restirct itself to his own narrow view. He deserves to be mocked for all kinds of reasons apart from the tripe you just spewed.

And I highly doubt you're in touch with what's "universally thought of as wrong-headed in academia."

So it is your position that prescriptivism, meaning dictionaries determine proper word use, isn't near universally thought of as wrong-headed in academia? Yeah, I think that stands as a testament to your reliablity on the subject for those who know better.

OMG, you're funny.

Don't ever accuse anyone of selective reading again.

This is most definitely DCP. It's got dumbass written all over it.

Charity can't compose a coherent thought as well as This Little Light of Mine can.

Besides, if it were Charity, we'd be in fast and testimony meeting already. I never saw Charity do anything other than cheer the MADfreaks on and say she knew the church was true.
