The Mopologetic Hall of Fame: Pacman Goes Trolling

Post by _Mister Scratch »

Those familiar with the times and seasons of the aptly named MADboard know all too well how much juliann, charity, and other MAD regulars like to boast about how TBMs never troll any other boards. Nevermind that RfM is routinely inundated with trolls, or that MAD posters show up on this board using sockpuppet names such as "Opie Rockwell" and "A Light in the Darkness." Facts such as these conveniently escape the notice of the likes of juliann!

However, it just so happens that one particular thread will go down in infamy. MAD mainstay Pacman begain a thread in which he ostensibly meant to praise the MAD moderating team (which may have been FAIR at the time), and instead wound up 'fessing up to his troll-like ways:

Pacman wrote:Our MODS have been praised in past posts, but I really didn't understand how good they really are until I went to another site.

In a short time of 2 days, I was:

1) Censured by a moderator for the following:

ME:
Moreover, I am not talking about the history of Catholicism. I am talking about the history of the early Church. I believe the two to be mutually exclusive.

MOD Ann,
This is, frankly, insulting. We believe they are the same thing and cannot be separated. Perhaps that's why you're getting some venom here. You're being insulting and you don't even realize it.

2) The same MOD then directed a racial slur at me.

3) After being maliciously defaced, a personal thread began targeted at the "irony" of how I couldn't believe Catholicism has the keys while maintaing that "my" church does. An erroneous statement was made that Joseph was the only one to receive the Priesthood from Peter, James, and John. And as such, I corrected them

ME:
And Joseph Smith wasn't the only one to receive it (I'll give that to you as homework).

Note his condescension here, assigning "homework" to his fellow posters. (And bear in mind that The Dude was banned temporarily merely for asking if Prof. P had read a book!) Also take note of his claim that a racial slur was directed at him, as this will be important later.

Anyways, the embarrassment continues:

Pacman wrote:Their system administrator:
You weren't asked to assign homework. You will answer what you've been asked to provide answers to.

Again, thanks to the MODs here (even when I haven't been their biggest fan). Compared to the competition, they are amazingly fair.

Cheers,
PacMan

P.S. If you want some entertainment, search for the site (I don't think I can post it). It'll prove enjoyable reading!

Oddly, he cannot see just how similar the tone of the moderating is, both at this Catholic board, and at MAD.... Further, note how he thinks his behavior is "entertaining."

Right away, TBMs take issue with what he's been up to:

cold steel wrote:Yes, but is it right to show up and begin making bold counter claims? Is that the best way to represent Mormonism? I don't blame the mods for asking for a change of tone. Just like here, it's best to acknowledge their beliefs and be respectful of them. Early Christianity was a difficult time. Good people were trying to protect the church and ensure that it survived.

Guess who shows up next?

juliann wrote:Really...you have seen mods do that here? Are you saying that the mods here should use racial slurs and shut down posters if what they say is "insulting"? How long do you think you would last here under the same standard?

Honestly? Not very long!

Next, Pacman chimes in with another post:

[quote="pacman"]Cold Steel (and others),

Head over there and sign-up (It's a small headache because you will need to wait for a response). If you think I'm not honest about my representation, I invite you to go read the thread (on Peter) or participate in one yourself. You will be blown away by some of the things they are willing (and permitted) to say. I've been call a heretic and a blasphemer (I didn't think people really used these terms anymore), simply because I had a different view. The first vision was libeled a fantasy, our religion a cult,

It's funny that you have no proof whatsoever that I'm a "MAD TBM," but have already counted me as an immigrated troll. Whatsmore, you have no bassi for calling me a troll other than posting something you find disagreeable on your board. If that is your new, special definition of the term troll, I think the right thing to do would to be to inform your audience of your lingo.

He didn't call you a troll. He said you are a sock puppet. Two different things. Unless, of course, you turn out to be a troll, in which case, he will have to change his catagorizing of you.

Hmph. Sounds like you're a troll to me... or is this a case of "prescriptivism." Heaven forbid anyone uses words properly in your presence.

He used me as an example of MAD posters who come to other boards and troll. Are you blind?

What I've done is no more trolling than posting "I don't think Joseph Smith was a prophet of God" at MAD is trolling. Trolling is not a synonym for posting things the majority of an online community is likely to disagree with.

Well, you're either in massive denial about the way people are perceiving you here (and if you're a Mormon, you're well practiced in the act of self-delusion, so it wouldn't surprise me), or you're so anti-"prescriptivism" (our word of the day, boys and girls) that you'll just assign whatever meaning you feel like to the words you use to suit whatever's going on in that head of yours.

But hey, maybe you aren't a troll. I mean, you're cracking me up today. I'm thoroughly enjoying our exchanges.

*sigh*... here we go again with the reading comprehension lesson for the day: he flat out called you a sock puppet. That doesn't mean you're a troll. You may be engaging in the act of trolling, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're a troll either. Can you not see the difference? (Goodness, it's like talking to a 12 year old).

Ok, a little visual aid to help cetain people *coughcoughalightinthedarknesscoughcough* distinguish a "Sock Puppet" from a "Troll".

This is a Sock Puppet.
Image

According to Wiki, a Sock Puppet can be spotted by the following...

Typically, the user has more knowledge than would be expected of a newcomer regarding the site's methods, rules, and community members; takes part in similar discussions and has mostly same opinions and concerns as the user's main account;

And this is a Troll.
Image

which Wiki defines as...

a troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding.

Therefore...

ImageImage

Not all Sock Puppets are Trolls and not all Trolls are Sock Puppets.

And technically, ALITD is a "Meat Puppet" unless he already has an account here under a different name.

Hope that helps.
