Looks like I'm just traipsing around the board after you today, Steuss. Again, well said.

Ah shucks… thank you. You’ll probably want to stop following me though, as I think I’ve reached my threshold for substantive posts for the week.

Qknowlton,
Two books in one weekend? I’m so stinkin’ jealous. It takes me about a month to make my way through one book. I think it took me half a year to make my way through East of Eden.

oh hey, Steuss. I saw over on MAD your interest in using your tax return to build your library. I love me an autodidact!
Anyway, you should start a companion thread here about that (unless you have and I didn't see it?). I could make some interesting suggestions, possibly.

Does this make sense? Do you agree or disagree? Are there other groups that were persecuted in history that can be compared to this?

You describe what is actually a rather common phenomenon.

Those who have been persecuted often persecute others.

It has to do with conformity.... to remain strong, a group "must" condemn those who do not agree or support their beliefs/culture/ideas.

Interesting reading you are doing there! :-)

I'm curious as to when the Church persecuted all these groups. Witches were burned, Mormons were driven out of the U.S. When did we go and do thou likewise?

I know many liberal Mormons who are quite happy in the Church. I've dated feminist Mormons who are again, happy in the Church (though I found one of them the most obnoxious people ever, I heard she got married, that guy is either incredibly strong-willed or a doormat). We say homosexuality is wrong but I haven't seen a ton of beatings involved. I have seen social ostracism of it but I (and many others) think that the persecutors are involved in the greater sin. I don't see the comparison standing up.
