Phelps is one hateful dude

Post by _moksha »

Have you followed the antics of Reverend Fred Phelps and his righteous mob of hateful believers? Here is their website: http://www.godhatesfags.com/main/index.html. They made the news recently by their hateful protest of Jerry Falwell's funeral (I would have thought they were comrades in arms). Even more offensive is their ongoing picketing of the funerals of American Soldiers, which you can read about on their site. Phelps is one hateful dude.

Seeing this end result of a anti-homosexual agenda gone haywire, should give even the most conservative LDS pause to reevaluate the Church's going overboard opposing gay rights.

Moksha, you might have not seen it, but I posted about this on the "parody" thread. Here's some of it:

Soon Fred Phelps is going to be reduced to picketing himself. Who else is left?

(Anybody ever see the WBC close-up in action? I did as part of a counter picket at one of their strange, strange events. Phelp's definition of "gay" is so broad as to include some forms of "hazing." He and his church/family showed up to picket a Long Island High School that had expelled some football team members for a hazing incident which included clumsy and homophobic humiliations. Somehow in Phelps's mind this constituted endorsement of "f***". Go figure.)

Hazing is now proof of homosexuality? OH NO!!!! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!!!! Further evidence: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/61615

Wasn't there a series of studies that showed the most homophobic people were turned on by homosexual erotica?

This may help to shed some light on erratic behaviors like those exhibited by Phelps and his band of disgruntled followers:

The idea that we should re-evalaute would fall under a Slippery Slope Fallacy.

I think you've got that a bit backwards, Nehor. For this to be a Slippery Slope, we'd have to be aware of various horrible consequences that would befall us if the LDS Church were suddenly to start treating homosexuals with compassion and decency... In actuality, the Slippery Slope Fallacy in this instance is usually posited by Far Right Wing conservatives, such as Pennsylvania congressman Rick Santorum, who has said that he thinks that allowing gay marriage will somehow lead to men having sex with dogs.

No, I think it posits that because the LDS believe that Homosexual conduct is a sin that the logical consequence of that belief is that we will become Reverend Phelps. Moksha's last sentence connects LDS belief with an anti-homosexual agenda gone haywire.

So there are good anti-homosexual agendas and bad anti-homosexual agendas?

I wasn't making a moral statement. I was saying that assuming that one belief automatically leads to that extreme is a faulty assumption.
