He's trying to prove that he's smart, which as far as I'm concerned he doesn't need to prove because it's obvious that he is extremely intelligent. He has probably killed more brain cells with alcohol than I started out with. Probably nobody here thinks that he is stupid, or ignorant, but his opinions and theories are extreme (and even uneducated). He doesn't find much agreement on this board, which he takes as a personal insult. His loathing of critics is beyond the pale of logic, it's a coping strategy for dealing with insecurity in his beliefs (and sense of meter). I'm still irked about some very personal remarks he made to me a few weeks ago (not that I care about his opinion, but I don't care for the implication that he's in any position to know anything about me -- I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole). I don't care what he 's like in real life. On this board he's a one-dimensional cartoon figure, unable to converse reasonably, and unable to defend his untenable positions on any topic because he's too personally invested in defending his own little personal self.

I almost agree with you, but he's been very open about being an alcoholic and I'm not revealing anything that everybody doesn't already know, and I'm not making up sh!t just for the sake of being mean. That said, I could be nicer a lot of the time, but I usually just don't feel like it.

You're right, he's been open about his alcoholism and you're not "revealing" anything that everybody doesn't know already. What you are revealing is a critical lack of character when you use someone's disease or condition to level insults such as this:

Basically, in Jersey's view, I am the lowest of the low because I have taken some cheap shots at Loran by referring to his alcoholism. She is right: I should not have done that. In any case, I don't think this is an issue of "overreacting" so much as my failure to put an end to interacting with Loran when I should have: i.e., when he fully disclosed the extent of his racism. So: Jersey Girl can berate me for picking on Loran's drinking problem; I can berate Loran for his racism, and that's that. In any case, I am totally done responding to any of Loran's posts.
