I think it's quite common for members of the LDS church to see these "splinter" groups as insignificant numbers of apostates, while the "true" church holds itself together. McConkie described these people as yapping dogs nipping at the heels of the church, but "the caravan moves on." Uh-huh.

When Joseph Smith and his brother were killed about a month after the Prophet made the statement that I posted in the OP, were the followers of Joseph Smith present and defending him against the mob?

I didn't think so either, twinkie. If Joseph kept a whole church together, how does one explain this:

# Latter Day Saints or Mormons

* Aaronic Order
* Apostolic United Brethren
* Church of Christ (Temple Lot)
* Church of Jesus Christ (Bickertonite)
* Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite)
* The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
* Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Strangite)
* Church of Christ with the Elijah Message
* Community of Christ
* Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
* Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
* Restoration Church of Jesus Christ
* Restoration Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
* Restored Church of Jesus Christ
* Sons Aumen Israel
* True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days

From Wiki, of course.

Silly woman. Just because a church splinters, it doesn't mean it hasn't held together.

Good double-talk Runtu.

From the SLC Mormon Church it is. And really what of the other spin offs amounted to much other then the now Community of Christ. And it only boats 250,000 members.

Can you show any one that has really prospered at all other then the SLC Church and maybe the CoC?

Before you go down this path I suggest you read the history of the events surrounding the murders of the Smith's. Keep in mind that Nauvoo had an army of over 5000 and could have done tremendous damage had they marched. The citiziens of Carthage and Warsaw feared theor towns would be leveled after the Smith's were killled. Governor Ford warned the town folk of Carthage that this was indeed a risk. But the Mormons did not seek vengence at all.

So in fact, no, there were very few of the followers of Joseph and Hyrum there when the dirty deed was done. Two apostles were there and they had had visitors. But why were they not there? Because Governor Ford asked them NOT to come to Carthage. He asked them to stay in Nauvoo and he promised that the Smith's would be protected.

The point is that the Church did not survive Smith. I think it certainly did and one proof is it has prospered.

The church certainly did survive the death of the The Prophet. I don't think that's in question. So did several other churches, including the FLDS, the CoC, the UAB, and to a certain extent, the TLC. I think that is the point. I think the prosperity of the LDS church is a direct result of Brigham's influence, not Joseph's.
