Who Knows wrote:I saw a youtube video on masonry (although it was kind of about the LDS temple as well) a while ago, that was set to some eery music, and it re-enacted the penalties (from a masonic point of view). Very creepy. Reading about them is one thing. Watching them is on another level.

It was PP who posted it here.

Unfortunately, youtube removed the video.

I can see why some of you don't have the love of the temple that I still have/had. Ehhh... I don't know how I feel about it now. Part of me doesn't want to believe it - but I know you guys aren't lying either. :(

It's portrayed as much more sinister than it was.

I don't know that I'd use the word sinister, but most people would consider the throat-slashing, disembowelling gestures to be at least mildly creepy.

My stake president pretty much explained the whole thing to me in his office when I got my first recommend. Even then, I wasn't quite prepared. Some people have said they were upset when the penalties, etc., were removed, but I was relieved.

I must admit I kinda wish they were still there.

I know...why indeed?

Do you also want to decapitate me for adultery, Nehor?

It wasn't for any sins like adultery. They were just the penalties for revealing the signs and tokens.

Nehor probably wishes they were still there, for the same reasons that they put them into the ceremony in the first place (and the same reasons the masons have them) - cuz theyre kewl! Makes you feel super-duper important and extra special - because hey, you just made a top secret pact with god - and look how serious it is - if i don't keep it, i have to slash my own throat!

kewl huh?

Oh I know runtu...I just meant if you want those penalties back, why not ask for the whole program of blood atonement. The decapitations I'm referring to are referenced in Vol II of Quinn's Mormon Hierarcy and I think the women in question, at least one of them definately, were punished for having relations with the gentile military.

Which I admit I'm not guilty of. Yet. Mr. Coffee???

There's that famous story of the castration of the guy who was the bishop's rival for the affections of a young lady.
