Anyone remember The Vines?

And there was Sansfoy and Brianspro! Two of my favorites!

If I recall correctly, part of what happened was when the board started limiting posts. It just wasn't the same after that!

TD,

I noticed The Vines when I first came on there because I'd known him years prior to that, likewise sansfoy and few opthers. But they didn't seem very active when I came on the board. Whenever this topic comes up (the demise of Z, exodus to FAIR) it seems that people imply that the board was inundated with critics and that's why folks left for FAIR. It didn't seem to me that the board was overrun with critics but I didn't read every single thread either.

On the other hand, I remember the capping quite well and seriously didn't know why that happened. I'm just trying to get a handle on this, I noticed the capping but didn't notice that the board was particularly overrun with critics. I should have paid more attention I guess!

The place wasn't "over-run" by critics, but believers FELT it was. There is a big difference. It appears they still feel beleaguered by critics on MAD, and look at the ratio there.

They did not feel adequately protected, and they felt outnumbered.

THAT'S what I mean! Were they really outnumbered or did it just seem that way to them?

Edited: Whoops! You were answering just as I was asking!

Hmmm, an important lesson for this board. Probably the level of there being a perceived overabundance of critics is related to the vehemence that is allowed. For instance, Polygamy Porter and Mercury while not being overwhelming in numbers, may cause such a precipitous rise in the level of vehemence as to produce this shift in perception of numbers. So what's a mod to do if they do not wish for a gradual withering away of their participants? Perhaps reigning in the level of vehemence somehow.

Reigning in the vehemence was always practiced at ZLMB in a nonpartisan manner. It is also strenuously practiced on critics at MAD AND the raw numbers of critics is also controlled.

Yet believers still feel beleaguered.

At MAD, there is a real need to restrain apologists as well - but everybody here already knows that. What I was suggesting was for this boards overall durability.

Based on my experiences, I don't think there is a way to ensure board durability. Shades would like this to be an open forum where anyone can post. He's even created various forums to suit the taste of most anyone.

I think what happens, and I could be wrong, is that once the newness of a board and encountering new personalities wears off, some of the posters naturally become weary of eachother (familiarity breeds contempt) and either leave or fight it out.

I wasn't planning to post this but, some of the posters who showed up on Z did so on account of another mass exodus. You all might not be aware of that, all true.

Perhaps it's just a case of one board dying out, folks migrating to another and so it goes?
