I still remember when my high school english teacher read that to us all in class (in Utah). I still bring it up and then quickly hide as Mormon women attempt to lynch me.

He did have to use the words "homely" and "pathetic". Oh, and then there was the story of the tin whistles and of the snoring.

Yes beastie, you're probably right. I get a kick out of it because I get a reaction from the LDS women I know (and no, they aren't ugly either).

This reminded me of something that Enemy Ace posted in the Fellowship Forum over at MA&D (it was a thread on "what converted you to the LDS faith"). Enemy Ace's reply:

Hi nehor...

What do you think about women who joke about polygamy?

I don't care who is joking about it, I do not like it.

It is a horrible, animalistic, and cruel practice and there is nothing funny about it.

The folks that joke about it wouldn't think it appropriate to joke about other horrific times when women and children have been hurt, abused, and degraded yet for some reason, they think polygamy is funny.

:-(

phaedrus ut,

You obviously haven't ventured down to the Telestial Kingdom, where a whole thread was once dedicated to the jokes concerning masturbation.

You should sign in in the Off-Topic FotC thread I started (it's on the front page down there somewhere). Thus far it's just me and beastie, but you can certainly join.

(And I think you should totally get Shades to change your "title" to Hiphopopotamus!!!!)

For the record: I know sometimes your lyrics are sexist, but the lovely bitches know, s*** no you're trying to correct this.

Sure, but most of the women I'm aware of who were involved in it (ancestors) didn't find it abusive nor degrading.

I also think that there is perhaps more ridiculing of polygamy than joking of it. Most of us know it's problematic. So why not say so? We do say so. We just don't think our ancestors were abused nor degraded.

So, if someone doesn't know they are being degraded it is fine?

Do you think all the slaves of the world considered themselves degraded?

Is it ok to abuse the children of the world because they do not understand they have the right to live with care and love?

The personal accounts of which I am personally aware... ALL speak of desperate, depressed, heart broken, suffering, sorrowful women who felt way beyond degraded.

I also think that there is perhaps more ridiculing of polygamy than joking of it. Most of us know it's problematic. So why not say so? We do say so. We just don't think our ancestors were abused nor degraded.

I see little ridicule from members... mostly joking from LDS men hoping for the day. :-(

I understand there are those who like polygamy... I guess they think joking about it is fine.

Personally, I think treating such a horrific and cruel practice as a joke is distasteful to say the least.
