People throughout history have fervently believed in things that are obviously harmful to self or others. Two recent examples are Islamic terrorists and followers of Heaven's Gate. No one can reasonably dispute that these people fervently believed in their religious teachings - they killed themselves (and in one case, others) for that religious belief. Yet what sane person would argue that these actions were justified?

Many of the early sealings of Joseph Smith to women usually met with a flat refusal at first by these women as they struggled with the concept. It was after prayer that the testimony was given and this answer to prayer was strong and powerful. Enough to change the minds of the women. I am not sure that flds women received such a witness or if for most it is just a 'I know that this principle is true' type of witness. But in Joseph Smith's time the answer to prayer by these women was a powerful jolt to the consciousness after much hestitation by these women.

There is a polygamous community in Centennial Park, Utah that split off from the Jeffs group. It is not self-isolating, suspicious or apprehensive about the outside world. It's children are allowed to watch television, own Gameboys, I-Pods, etc.

Here is an article from the Deseret News where the Centennial Women Plead Their Case:

Here is their activist website, including YouTube videos where you'll immediately see a difference in the teenager's appearance:

I saw a documentary on Cenntennial Park a year or so ago, and it was pretty amazing. They were just normal people, nothing like FLDS. They were, of course, fairly whacko Mormons. But that comes with being a Mormon polygamyist, don't ya think?

Beastie I watched these interviews a while back on youtube. I don't remember which one it was, and I'm not going to listen to them all, but she said some of the other wives were jealous of her.

I just found that interesting. And troublesome.

Here's the youtube link also:

I think most LDS think those testimonies are different, not as strong, they didn't pray right, etc. Only the women of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young's time prayed correctly and got the correct witness.
