Female missionaries began when?

Did the LDS church have female missionaries from the beginning of the misison program, or did that come later?

The first officially called Sister Missionary was Harriet Maria Horsepool Nye who was set apart in 1898 by the Apostle Brigham Young (not the one who was Prophet). Her husband was a Mission President at the time. The first pair of female Missionaries was called shortly afterwards and they served in Britain. Both were well-educated and intelligent and served to throw a wrench into the press that was at the time implying that Mormon women were basically looked-down upon slaves of their husbands. They had some success and were also persecuted as most of the Elders at the time were. Rocks thrown, a few mobs, the usual.

Prior to this some Missionaries were accompanied by their wives into the Field and they worked together however no official call was given.

I don't remember how prevalent Sister Missionaries were between 1898 and now but I can check tomorrow if you're interested.
