Yes, the film has been almost universally panned. I wonder if the guy on MAD who'd been interested in a letter-writing campaign feels vindicated (or embarrassed, even?). Certainly, there is surely a good film to be made about MMM, but this, evidently, ain't it, which is rather disappointing. Nevertheless, after watching the trailer, I had a sneaking suspicion that the film would turn out to be a cheesy, Hallmark Movie of the Week-type turkey.

"Buffalo" Bill Cody ( Who was twelve and in the area at the time) and historian Henry Inman both stated that "... it was proved that the Mormon Church had nothing to do with the massacre; that Lee, in fact, had acted in direct opposition to the officers of the Church."
Brigham Youngs stance during the Utah War was to go out of your way not to kill anyone, his entire campaign consisted off cutting off supply lines, not killing US soldiers, or anyone else.
"proved" LOL: did Lee do the whole thing himself: what a mean, lean killing machine he was; Lee put O.J to shame. ... Did the church do it's own investigation and excommunicate those involved - or did they think that Lee's execution would cover the sins of others - this movie actually might be just the beginning -
here is some academic thoughts - and not from BYU.
