It kind of sounds like a cattle auction, right? Of course, the whole scene is pretty sad, but I couldn't help but laugh about the "pretty ones" getting plucked out by the missionaries.
And the irony is that all the while, the prophet was looking over the wives left at home and taking his pick of the crop.

Here's an interesting story about a girl who left the Jeffs community:
I thought this statement about her father was interesting and rather sad. "I didn't know him while we lived in the same house for 13 years and he had to ask me my name every time he saw me. In fact, the question he would ask is, 'What is your name and who is your mother?' and that was the only way he could identify that I was his child," Hammon said.

Cattle auction, indeed.
I just read this. It made me physically ill.
By their fruits shall ye know them.
We are a deliberately blind people, blithely going our way, preaching, teaching while studiously ignoring the culpability of our forefathers in creating a nightmare. We honor them and what they did, we revere them for their sacrifices, we don't ever hold them responsible for the destruction of people's lives that occurs right up to today.

"Brethren, I want you to understand that it is not to be as it has been heretofore. The brother missionaries have been in the habit of picking out the prettiest women for themselves before they get here, and bringing on the ugly ones for us; hereafter you have to bring them all here before taking any of them, and let us all have a fair shake." - Apostle Heber C. Kimball, The Lion of the Lord, New York, 1969, pp.129-30.
"I say to those who are elected to go on missions, remember they are not your sheep: they belong to Him that sends you. Then do not make a choice of any of those sheep; do not make selections before they are brought home and put into the fold. You under stand that. Amen" - Apostle Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p.256.
What a strange dude to view women in such a way. And the apologists think the the FLDS are not somewhat the legacy of 19th century polygamy? What is so different from Warren Jeffs having the pick of the lot and Heber's comments?

That said, people in southern Utah are in a position to help, and it wouldn't be a bad service project for the wards and stakes there. They might even gain some future missionaries out of it. ;-)
Sounds like a good Eagle project.

If polygamy is a good system for situations where men are killed off, was it a big part of rebuilding Europe after WW2? Or, here in the US we had a Civil War at the same time that Polygamy was going strong in Utah. Why didn't the US encourage poygamy in those hard hit states that lost so many men?

Hi SWSU... :-)
I disagree that the harem lifestyle is good for any situations concerning modern humans.
Children do better with the investment of a father. There is no question about this. The harem lifestyle for men is about sperm donation not love, care, concern, intimacy, or parental investment. For women it is about being a single mother while attaching to a man for a sperm or to be used for his pleasure. I just do not see how this is in any way a good idea for humans.

I may be in the minority, but I think Heber C. Kimball has a legitimate complaint here.
