Should I just go ahead and make the DCP joke about him being a "so called" academic?

Is that some of that so-called anti-Mormon humour, Bond? rearing its so-called ugly head again, Bond?

On the MAD conversation about this letter, DCP's use of so-called is justified thusly by a poster named jwhitlock:

Have you looked at the dictionary definition of the phrase "so-called"? And why did you assume that DCP meant that it didn't really occur - when the primary definition of so-called is "called or designated thus"? Surely you're not claiming that DCP is claiming it didn't happen - are you?

So DCP was using "so-called" just to alert us that the event is called Mountain Meadows Massacre?!?!?!?!??!

As some of you have pointed out, this is a phrase of derision used by GAs in the past. So why is it name being derided? It can only have to do with "massacre".

This is just strange. Do Utahns commonly believe that it wasn't really a massacre and has been blown out of proportion by "anti-mormons"? Do they have some sort of erroneous idea of what occurred that would make the term "massacre" inaccurate?
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Poor choice

I think his use of "so-called" needs to be read in the context of other uses of the term by LDS officials. If DCP did not intend to use it in the sense they have when speaking of intellectuals and gays, then it was at least a poor choice of terms.

Which newspaper was this printed in? My newspaper has a policy of not printing any letter to the editor that contains offensive language. Perhaps "so-called" isn't offensive to most of the readers of whatever paper it was printed in. In other words, perhaps Daniel was only saying what everyone else was thinking.

A joke? I wouldn't call it a joke.

He's also a so-called intellectual, a so-called professor, and a so-called christian. The only adjective I've heard to describe him that I wouldn't use the phrase "so-called" in front of is dumbass.

I think the "so-called" wasn't really meant to be placed in front of MMM. He likely meant the Mormons' so-called involvement in it. But then, denial rages on in his so-called brain, doesn't it?

It was The Weekly Standard. Here's a link to DCP's letter:

Trevor is correct about how "so-called" is used as a code word in Mormonism.

Sorry I haven't weighed in on my attendence at the MMM Memorial last week, or any of the fascinating "it was an apology no it wasn't" subsequent hoo-ha.

I've been busy with family stuff (primarily helping my 99 year old grandmother transition from the physcial therapy rehab she was in for three months after breaking her hip). This has left me exhausted mentally. Physically, I'm also exhausted by the altitude change: the first time I've ever experienced it. I walked from the Marriott Library to downtown SLC last week and the walk back nearly laid me out. I thought I was on the verge of yet another health problem until I realized that the altitude is likely to blame. Hope I acclimate soon as I plan to hike, bike and other things while I'm here.

I'm getting a rental car tomorrow so I'll be able to get together with folks and can't wait to meet up with you all. If you've yet to PM me your phone # please do!

I've done a bit of work in the library and had a few minor finds. I've also got some new blog material including a Diaper Man update! I better go write that one up first. God knows information like that is more important than some so-called massacre....
