Great observation, Shades. It seems to me that a faithful Mormon could accept that Smith learned of divine councils from a perfectly natural source, but that he was inspired somehow in his take on it. In other words, why the rigidity as to how these things came about? It does seem that Mormon apologetics are developing their own strange kind of quasi-orthodoxy that they feel a burning need to protect with all their might. I have found this frustrating for some time. Who is to say they are right? Do they really represent the authoritative position of the LDS Church when they do this?
