For clarification: Some people take medication so they can function. People take meds for all sorts of reasons. My point was that if you take a drug (whatever your drug of choice is - alcohol, tobacco, food, sex, whatever!) you shouldn't be accusing others of doing what you yourself do!

I understand that for some people they MUST have help with depression. When PP said 'happy pills' I was thinking in terms of all sorts of medications that people take for a variety of reasons. As I mentioned before I know PLENTY of people that are on prozac and other meds and they are not depressed. To me it doesn't matter who takes what for whatever reason.

I just didn't enjoy PP using it in a debate to beat someone over the head with it. Him drinking and being 'happy' is no different than the women I know that take their pills cause they help them cope with their children. And they are NOT clinically depressed.

It's a good point. Although I would say that if the LDS person in question considers themselves morally superior to those that drink (or smoke hash, or whatever), then they probably deserve it.

Otherwise, I agree - I also think it's hypocritical.

Exactly. I may have some leaning towards depression and other problems. But, I have tried both and I have found, for me, that certain kinds of pot work perfectly for me. Now, if everyone would get off my back ove rthe morality thing and they would legalize it, life would be good.

He's been keeping the resident insomniac company.

And for that I'm eternally grateful! ;)

WTF?

My wife is on nothing and probably has 2x the number of children that your friends have. I just don't get it. "Cope" with their kids.. give me a break.

The only people that care about their life should be them.

Again, my wife and I are happy both sober and drunk.

in my opinion, people create their own misery and look for an easy way out.

When I was a young boy up into my first year of high school, I had a paper route. I had to get up very early. I've never lost the habit.

On some rare days, I actually sleep in until 7:00. Can't go any later. Impossible.

Drinking can be two function:
- for an alcoholic, yes, it is same as the pills. (Or worse. I have such friends.)
- for others, it is a social event. Like garden parties with less preparation.

"so early on a Saturday"
Gramps and me, in Middle Europe are on GMT + 2 Hours.

I started popping vicodin in order to get through sundays. It was easier to get through the incessant boring meetings. The first time I ever doubled up on vicodin was a Sunday morning before sacrament meeting. For a few weeks it would be the only time I would double up. Then, well...it got alot worse.

Well your wife has more than some of the women I know. A few of them guzzle Children's Motrin too for a quick pick-me-up. No lie! And I actually know quite a few people in the health profession that do this too! Odd? Yes? But regardless they chug, guzzle, whatever for whatever purpose. I don't care why they do it.

Yanno Porter I didn't say these women were miserable. You assume they are? I cope with my kids by sending them the hell out of the house and tell them not to return for a few hours. Doesn't mean I'm miserable - it's MY coping mechanism. Sheesh.

My point is we ALL do something to cope. Some of us desperately need something to get over hurdles in our lives.

I don't care why you drink. Although I've gotta say with the chest beating about drinking (I've gotta say this most definitely is an ex-mo thing!- or seen on college campuses and teen boys) it appears that it is some marvelous rite of passage for some of you.

Is drinking a way in which you prove to yourself and others that you are INDEED an ex-mo? It appears that way to me!

Surely you recognize that most adult males in their 40's don't brag about drinking. And there have been people on this board that PRETEND to be drunk because of the social status this apparently affords them with the other ex-mos.

So when I see this behavior (OFTEN! Even from people I think very highly of that let me in on the secret that they indeed are NOT drunk) I wonder what purpose does this serve? Is there a purpose? For sure! Look everyone I'm normal! I'm not a Mormon anymore! I DRINK! Woooo!

It's a coping mechanism. Acceptance as well as chucking off the yoke of Mormon taboos. No? Or why else the constant need (seen over and over and over again by various posters) to proclaim that spirits are in the system and working their marvelous magic?
