They are talking about the makeup of the crew, and whether they should have all men, all women or a mixture.

The claims they are making is that if you mix the crew, that sex is going to happen. So, just let it happen. We can't stop it and we should just go with it.

Why do we believe that if you get men and women together, that the ONLY conceivable outcome is that they WILL have sex?? Is it just me, or do we not give people enough credit for the ability to control their baser urges?

It is just probably you, dude.
There's a good way to prevent this while having man & women in cramped conition of space travel.
Just take their tools away....Castrate them men, circumcise the women....
No baby problem...

It requires a crew that can work productively and reasonably harmoniously with each other. Throw in a good dose of sexual tension, and you've potentially disrupted the smooth and efficient operation of the crew.

I see it as a legitimate risk and one that I'd be concerned about.

Yeah, I don't disagree with you here, but I really don't think that one can plan on it not happening. Whatever plans they make should admit of the strong possibility or even likelihood of it happening, and go from there. That would be the most prudent plan, IMHO.

The sexual tension is going to be there no matter what, unless they screen all applicants for that small percentage of people who are truly asexual.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

In other words, what makes for a successful mission to mars and what makes for a good movie about a mission to mars are on exactly opposite ends of the spectrum.

It’s not that we are weak, it’s that the concept of space-sex is unavoidably attractive.

It's miles above the mile-high club.

Tru enough, that. Can you imagine the weightlessness, the unlimited position possibilities?

Damn, I got to get myself and the wife in space.

One thing though about "break ups in space". If the astronauts approached it in a way like "f***-buddies in space" and not try to create relationships, the stress relief would be worth it. Frustration out in the open is always better than repressed, simmering passions that explode onto the scene, usually at the most inopportune times.

Everyone wants to be a member of the 20-mile high club. Every movie I've seen, whenever a man and a woman walk into the same room together, they have sex. The people planning the mission probably watch the same movies.

That sounds like perfection! Just take spouses with you. No need for "f***-buddies in space". Unless of course some just prefer to have "f***-buddies" in space rather than their spouses. If that's the case, then yes, they are that weak and relish the opportunity to have a fun buddy. Of course to have "f***-buddies in space" work I would think all parties would have to be pretty clear what boundaries should be set and their expectations.

There is great art outside the porn industry, my friend.
