A Matter of Genes and Chromosomes

Post by _charity »

The LDS view is that God is the literal father of Jesus Christ. And this is not a thread to discuss the details of conception, so don't go there. Other Christian denominations suggest that the conception of Jesus required no male of any kind.

So my question is this: Where did the other 23 chromosomes come from? Obviosly, Mary's 23 could not simply have been doubled, because she had no Y chromosome to contribute and have a male child. And science of course would uphold the idea that no individual exists with only 23 chromosomes.

So, if you don't believe that God is the literal father of Christ, and you believe in the virgin birth, what do you think about this?

For a moment pretending that I believe in a virgin birth and God being responsible for this: Why are you certain that Mary's chromosomes were even a factor?

Couldn't Jesus have been a clone? Matter of fact, that makes more sense to me (if I believe that God existed and he had chromosomes) then any other possibility.

In vitro?

Interesting. So He was completely, 100% divine?

THe idea is it was a miracle. One can assume if God is really what we think God is he could just add the other 23 anyway he want. SHAZAM!! And there you have it.

How about God can perform miracles beyond human comprehension?

How about Jesus is a God and didn't need any human DNA?

How about God created Mary with an fully fertilized human egg ready to go?

How about while Mary slept she was touched by the Divine and immediately perfected DNA formed in her body to fertilize the egg?

And why do you believe Mary's chromosomes could not be doubled? Maybe they were not split in the first place (with a little alteration here and there? For a God who could create this universe a little divine intervention on a strand of DNA would be nothing.

Maybe Joseph's DNA was replicated by God to implant in Mary's body at the right time?

We could come up with a thousand possibilities... I mean certainly God knows much more than what our little tiny, newly evolved primate brains can figure out.

Personally the idea of God the father having human DNA never felt quite right... but that is just me.

Just to be clear, I personally do not believe in the virgin birth, nor do I believe God is a human male.

I think this is the position of many Christians. Not that he was of a similar substance, but the exact same substance as per In Vivo cloning. This of course would require God to be a male humanoid of semitic extraction.

I think in fifty years they won't even need males as they will just hit the egg with small electronic shock wave and it will start to divide and create a perfect clone of the mother or the mother's father or grandfather.

Interesting point Mok.. I had not thought about this.

I recently saw a show on the discovery channel where experts were trying to figure out where a skeleton came from. It was so cool how they did this. They took the first upper molar (If I recall correctly) and extracted some DNA because evidently this molar as it forms holds on the nutrients from the food the person ate as a child, so they can match the molecular information in the tooth to a VERY specific area of the world. AMAZING.

Anyway, if Jesus looked anything like those in his community, according to LDS doctrine God the father would have to have the same genetic make-up of a person residing in Jerusalem during the year 2,000.

Hmmm...

Intresting comments. I will add my 2 cents.

1. The simplest explanation is best.

2. Miracles aren't "shazzams. They are operation of laws we don't know and understand yet.

3. "Human" DNA came from Adam. And where did Adam get his from? And yes, I believe that Adam was placed here as who he was, and wasn't just a one step up mutation of a lower life form.

By the way, for all you evolutioninsts out there, how do you determine exaclty when a new species has evolved? Or do you use some kind of contiuum, and man never really became a different species, just a spot on a continuum?
