I can testify to that, Brother Mok. Boring. Dull. No good stopping places. Too easy to speed (I think I picked up at least 5 or 6 tickets on that stretch of road during my college years).

Oh that blessed drive. Highway 88 from Jackson, CA through the beautiful Sierra Nevadas, across the state border and past Gardnerville and Carson City, then over to Reno, then I-80 across the interminible wastelands of Nevada (Lovelock, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Elko, Wells, Wendover), through the rock message laden salt flats, then the brine stink, the lovely stink of the Great Salt Lake. In a 1991 manual transmission Pontiac LeMans hatchback. Tape-deck standard. BYU must have been worth it, right?

Ah, Jackson, CA. That's God's country, after a fashion. I have some good memories from Jackson. The wife and I getting after it in the red-velvet excess of the honeymoon suite in the old Jackson Hotel. The finer tastes of those nights we spent at Fox's Inn. Me staggering up the stairs in the Jackson Hotel after playing the piano for drinks until 3:00am. (At least that cured me of any further affinity for scotch.)

Now, as for the drive from Reno to SLC -- done it many times, though not as much in the past 15 years. We did make that drive last August, with a five hour detour through Ely due to a fire east of Battle Mountain. Boy, that was fun! Nothing much has changed, except that Wendover is obviously trying to pretend to be more upscale than everyone knows it really is. Evanston - Cheyenne, SLC - Reno -- it's six or one half dozen of the other. They both are lacking in the scenery department and you're just as likely to be hit head on by a van stuffed with 20 wetbacks as fall asleep -- hypnotized by straight stretches of road that go on for 20 - 30 miles at a time.

Thanks, Bond. It looks like most of it is the middle of nowhere with towns sprinkled here and there. Geez, I don't like the looks of it. Very boring!

Yeah. There isn't much between Laramie (where the main attraction is the U. of Wyoming) and Rock Springs Wy. If you can go I-70 and then north on I-15 I believe then go that way. Over the rockies (the good Rockies, not those crappy hills in southern Wyoming) is the way to go.

The Rockies are what I had hoped to avoid. I'm pretty sure I'm bagging the whole idea now. Thanks for your advice. I blame IKEA for this insanity.
IKEA??? Don't you know they are the walmart of Europe?

Walmart sucks and IKEA sucks with a European accent.
