stuck in NYC airport. What to do

On the way to upper state NY , I was stuck in the JFK airport as a connecting flight was cancelled. If it happens again, what do you recommend doing in the big apple if one only has 1 hour (4 hrs minus 1hr travel - 2hrs check-in)? How about 10 min.? how about 2 hrs?

I don't really know that there is much you could do, ABman. A cab ride into Manhattan takes about 45 minutes, and is expensive (approx. $75). I suppose you could take a bus, or possibly the subway, but I imagine that would eat up even more time. So, it would seem that if you are going to do anything, it would have to be done in either Brooklyn or Queens, and I'm afraid I'm unaware of what fun things there are to do in those areas. (Maybe you could go get a steak at Peter Luger's?)

It would take me a long time to get there (from my part of Brooklyn): an hour at least, more depending on the time of day and manner of transport (my car, train, subway, or cab). I think you can cab into the city for less than $75 (I think the flat rate for cabs is $40 from JFK to anywhere city-wise, more for car service) but you don't have time to get there, do something and get back.

Not enough time for anywhere in Brooklyn or Queens either (I'm thinking places to eat and museums and such).

The best you could do is get someone who lived nearby to meet you there for terminal food and a drink.

Yeah, the flat rate is something like $45, though with the airport fee, bridge tolls, and tip, the total winds up being somewhere in the neighborhood of $75. (At least with the way I tip, I suppose.)

And as I recall, there *are* some decent places in JFK, no? There certainly are in O'Hare in Chicago, but that's another story.

Places to eat inside JFK? Like every airport I've been in its basically mall food court stuff. I could be wrong; I've not made a study. My M.O. is to find free wifi and a magazine store and hunker down with iPod at full blast to try to dispel the indignities I suffered or witnessed from the increasingly authoritarian regime of airport security. Thank god I won't be going through Terminal 5 at Heathrow anytime soon.

In your opinion, does the increasingly authoritarian regime of airport security better fulfill its stated intent, i.e. to reduce or eliminate airline terrorism? Or is it pointless?
