No doubt they feel or at least react to pain. So, what are your thoughts on hunting (hunters don't always kill their prey in the first shot) and fishing?
And no, I'm not saying that I think partial birth abortions are okay. I'm just getting you think from another perspective.
I never liked hunting. I hated it. I felt pretty bad for the animals. But then again I love meat, so I don't feel worthy to criticize in that regard. So in a way killing animals is a necessary evil for me, but I find no joy in it at all.
No I don't bowhunt or anything that might cause the animal unnecessary pain, even though bow hunting is obviously more of a sport. The only regret I have about this is that my father loves hunting and was disappointed when his boys didn't. I love shooting clay pigeons or working with the ballistics and physics of firearms.
I don't feel quite as bad about killing birds or even reptiles for some reason. My guess is it has something to do with how closely we're related to mammals as opposed to birds. Plus turkey hunting is very difficult even with high quality firearms. If that is unsatisfying as an answer than I guess I can't really tell you why, it's just a knee jerk feeling that I observe in myself. I haven't tried to school this feeling in any way as of yet. I'm not really sure what kind of pain a fish is in when it gets hooked, but I'd guess that it must be substantial. Yet once again, this doesn't bother me so much. I don't really like fishing. It's just something I would do if I had to, but it doens't really amuse me that much.
Now if you asked me if I was for stem cell research I would tell you yes. I don't see blastocysts as human yet. Perhaps I'm wrong in this regard but a clump of cells doesn't feel pain because the nervous system is not developed yet. Secondly early embryos are thrown in the trash every day in fertility clinics. At first we thought that unnatural, but now even in the Church people have gotten used to the idea. I wonder if they know that human sperm is tested for viability by fertilizing hamster egg cells. We know that even under normal and optimal conditions most fertilized eggs will not make it to birth, yet even in the Church we still keep procreating because some zygotes do make it to birth.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.
