I use both and both stop responding. IE more than Firefox though. I wrote a blog, then opened a tab to take a picture from google but got sidetracked when I found an interesting picture in regards to the Aaronic Priesthood and when I clicked it the browser crashed, but when one tab stops reponding they all do. I don't want to lose what I have written so I am waiting for the browser to resume responding. I know it won't but there is always hope.

I googled patching as I had never heard of that before, I just got a load of pages saying if you don't patch your computer is doesn't stand a chance and is vurnerable. How does one patch their computer? Do they need to?

With respect to writing in word and then posting... It is a bit late for that, but I will certainly keep it in mind for future reference.

Thanks. I still think Vista sucks though. Perhaps in a few years it will all make sense.

I agree that Vista sucks big-time.

I bought a MacBook in October, and I have NEVER regretted it. ;)

For me, that only tends to happen when I have lots of youtube videos playing at once or lots of tabs with huge pictures.

In Vista, patching should be fairly automatic. If you want to check for updates at any time, just o to the start menu in Vista and then type "update" without the quotes into the search space at the bottom. Wait a few seconds, then click on Windows Update and finally check for updates and then install them.

By all means, go ahead and try other OSes, I recommend being familiar with a few. If it's any help, you can use Microsoft Virtual PC (free from microsoft.com) and then install other PC operating systems to try out. I've had trouble getting Ubuntu Linux to work on the virtual PC because of video problems, but FreeBSD works great. You could always try dual-booting too, but I'm no expert there. You'll want to backup your computer before that though.

Every time I have tried to install Norton anti-virus, I cannot save word programs or much of anything else. There goes my $$$$.

I just had 4GB or RAM installed on my laptop over the weekend. Of the 4GB, it only recognizes 2.7GB. I am using a 32-bit OS, so I knew it wouldn't recognize all of it, but I was expecting 3.7GB, not 2.7. I don't even have a kick-ass sound or graphics card to account for the loss (since it can only address a total of 4GB, some of which is dedicated to the graphics, etc).

<---- Pissed.

Even with Aero turned off and all of the other whistles and bells, the damn thing uses between 700MB and 1.2GB or RAM when it's just idling.

Hate Vista.

I know Microsoft is the devil and all, but it's not their fault. They had to do it for application compatibility because of 3rd party hardware / drivers.

See this link
This behavior is the expected result of certain hardware and software factors.

Various devices in a typical computer require memory-mapped access. This is known as memory-mapped I/O (MMIO). For the MMIO space to be available to 32-bit operating systems, the MMIO space must reside within the first 4 GB of address space.

For example, if you have a video card that has 256 MB of onboard memory, that memory must be mapped within the first 4 GB of address space. If 4 GB of system memory is already installed, part of that address space must be reserved by the graphics memory mapping. Graphics memory mapping overwrites a part of the system memory. These conditions reduce the total amount of system memory that is available to the operating system.

The reduction in available system memory depends on the devices that are installed in the computer. However, to avoid potential driver compatibility issues, the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limit the total available memory to 3.12 GB. See the "More information" section for information about potential driver compatibility issues.

If a computer has many installed devices, the available memory may be reduced to 3 GB or less. However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB.

Thanks Abman. I had no idea that the maximum in Vista is typically 3.12GB in lieu of 4GB. This would help explain the 2.7GB that it is recognizing. I guess I can only hope that my chip-set will support a 64-bit OS (once drivers catch up).

The only time I've ever noticed a browser crash like the OP is describing is with Firefox and then only when I've forgotten to update to the latest version of Flash while on a flash heavy site. Consequently I update programs like that often and tend to use Opera for most surfing (Firefox is necessary for a lot of video geavy sites, which is why I have it). A lot of the problem is how bloated Firefox is (and most browsers are these days).
