In today's entry in my weblog (for August 04, 1990), I tell how I commit my first major sin as a missionary. I won't ruin the surprise by posting about it here.

Anyway, now I'm curious about what, if anything, was going through Shoko's mind. Therefore, I'd like to get a woman's perspective:

To all the women reading this, do you think what she did was completely and totally innocent, or was I right to read something more into it?

You were right to read more into it. She was hoping to eventually seduce you. Good thing you didn't let her have her way with you...right?

Also, would you have done what she did? Why or why not?

No I would have been more aggressive. I would have led you to some secluded area, brought you back to my place, connived, whatever it took to take advantage of you. If my husband was on this board, he'd verify it.

It would've felt wonderful to let her have her way with me, but that's why all missionaries have companions--so they can't ever be alone with members of the opposite sex or otherwise expect to get away with anything without getting tattled on.

This is a cute entry, Shades. You were so innocent and naïve. If you felt guilty about the hand holding thing, you shouldn't have. You were HUMAN! And banned from female contact for two years! Of course holding hands with a girl was going to feel good. LOL

I'm joking a bit with you Shades however there is some truth. For one I wouldn't have likely been in Shoko's position, that is I doubt I would have ever had any interest in any religious male other than to talk to casually. However I'm assuming you think she may have been attracted to you as a male and she probably was. Certainly a female does not need to lead any man across a street so it seems a little more than just being friendly. Would your male friends ever lead you across the street? So assuming she was flirting, what I am saying is that at her age I was aggressive with males if I was interested. I met my husband while playing hooky from high school on a train going downtown from the suburbs. He was going to university at the time. Though I'd seen him in previous years since he attended the same high school and at that time I had a crush on him, along with other males. I had a valentine's party and even though we weren't friends I got his phone number and asked him to it. In general I wasn't interested in guys that went after me, I picked the guys and aggressively went after them. So had I been interested in you, had I been in Shoko's position assuming she was, I would have been quite open about where I stood. You wouldn't be asking years later whether I was flirting or not. But to keep things in perspective I got married at 21 years and have now been married 35 years. I was definitely on the wild side before marriage, not after except with my husband. I'm not one for playing mind games, or worrying much about what other people think and the concept of sin has always been foreign to me.

She was flirting in my opinion. but there may be cultural differences to consider that I am unaware of. Most foreign girls find American missionaries very attractive so I'm guessing she had a huge crush on you.

I would not have done what Shoko did unless I was in love with a missionary (and I would have felt really guilty for trying to seduce an innocent servant of God so I doubt I would have let myself give in to the temptation). But if you resemble Richard Gere then I would have to rethink that one.....

Shall we place bets anyone? I don't think we'll find Shades getting any wilder than holding hands with a girl while on his mission. Keep in mind she was the one flirting with him and he's still thinking about it and wondering was she or wasn't she.
