Dylan: Evolution: Hard Rain.

Our subject is one of my favorite Dylan songs: A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall.

Here's the same song from my favorite era of Dylan live shows (1975-1976). Note that he just yells out the lyrics. This is quite a powerful performance. I dig it gigatons.

And here's Dylan singing this song nearly 40 years old in 2000. I saw my second Dylan live show in Nashville in 2000. *This* is the Dylan I fell in love with. This is Dylan, the old man, who finally understands the songs he has written. This was the Dylan that ushered me into his massive back catalog.

The second is my favorite. I like the fact that Baez is backing him up for the two are ever intertwined in my memory. As for the old man understanding the song he wrote. Perhaps it's that he had life experience to apply to it.

My favorite Dylan is Positively 4th Street.

I watched them all, Chris.

I enjoyed the 1975 performance a lot. I also liked the 2000 performance. He seemed more "knowing", for lack of a better word, in the 2000 performance, but then wrinkles have a way of creating that effect. ;) Hope I don't look too "knowing" yet...

Edited out of this YouTube version, but plain on the live CD version: Dylan turns to the band (after having been repeatedly "clapped" down by the unappreciative British audience) and says: "Play damned LOUD!"

I can't speak to that. I guess Dylan stopped being relevant in 1977 for you.

I'm younger, sorry.

My Dylan is backwards looking.

It hasn't stopped my enjoyment of the incredible music he produced in the past.

I'm guessing you don't like his 1997 Grammy Award winning album?
