Does Satan still rule the waters?
Years ago while serving an LDS Mission we were told swimming was verboten because Satan ruled the waters. It was dangerous for missionaries or any of the Lords servants to go in or on the waters as the adversary would use them to drown you.
Is this still taught or believed?

This reminds me of when my I was a kid and we were warned not to go down in the cellar of my grandparent's house because there was a ghost, when really they didn't want us to fall down the steep steps and break our neck.
The adversary rules the waters? That's just weird. It sounds more like a liability issue to me.

Twinkie, if you have not yet watched "The Village" by M. Night Shyamalan, I highly recommend it.twinkie wrote:This reminds me of when my I was a kid and we were warned not to go down in the cellar of my grandparent's house because there was a ghost, when really they didn't want us to fall down the steep steps and break our neck.

It gives great insight into how the religious myths of god and satan are created and passed down from parent to child.

It's not taught. It is believed by some. The reason Missionaries don't swim is the state of dress at most swimming locations. There are exceptions in some Missions.

I heard that Satan ruled the waters on my mission too. I don’t know why the Church keeps saying this, because if was true, why are just the missionaries restricted from swimming, and not all of the Church? The real reason is like what The Nehor said. I don’t know why the Church doesn’t say this more reasonable, real reason than the ‘Omen’ one.
