Three years ago when I signed up for the Typepad account, they had some of the best templates and blog features around, and all the free blogs looked really cheap and silly. Now Wordpress almost completely outdoes Typepad's paid features with their free features. For example, I find doing pictures with captions to be way easier at Wordpress. At Typepad I had to code them as HTML tables myself.
I definitely think Wordpress blogs look better than Blogspot blogs. And I agree with Bond, the blogging features and options for the forums here are about as minimal as possible, though it's a nice thought. I just set up a forums blog here as a link to my regular blog at Typepad/Wordpress.
If you do sign up for a free Wordpress or Blogspot account, you can always set the account to not publish your blog until you're done practicing whatever it is you want to practice and are comfortable with the format. Then no one will see it while you mess around but you.
Have fun with it. :)
Too true. Apparently you can buy stuff for Wordpress, but I'm poor [and suck at site customization] so blah. I like the fact that you can easily upload videos. You can upload pics on this blog but not videos.
There are lots of cool things you can do behind the scenes, like setting posts to appear at a certain time. The only gripe is that you can't do privacy as well on Wordpress as you can do here, where the blog is tied to the message board such that you can set friends only and hide posts in that way.
