I mean both candidates that are in the running now are jokes. Am I seriously supposed to go behind the curtain and push the botton on either of those guys? they both are a joke. I can't imagine 4 years of having either of those guys in the oval office.

Well I think Biden screwed the pooch again with another lie. Palin nailed him on saying he didn't support clean coal and he adamantly denied it, saying he was taken out of context and was referring to dirty coal or not sending coal technology to China or whatever. Not sure what the hell he meant but here is what he actually said beforehand:

But guess what? China’s going to burn 300 years of bad coal unless we figure out how to clean their coal up. Because it’s going to grow in your lungs and there’s nothing we can do about it. No coal plants here in America. Build them if they’re going to build them over there, make them clean, because they’re killing you.

From what I understand, Kevin, Biden is saying he personally has consistently supported clean coal in his voting record, not in what he has said (incorrectly) about the Obama ticket's position.

I thought the debate was pretty good. I thought the moderator proved fair, luckily. I thought Palin did much better than I expected, but so did Biden. I was pretty happy with Biden's effort tonight. Palin seemed more composed and comfortable, but I was irritated in some of her responses which switched the topic to something she felt more ready to say.

This is what Biden said tonight:

"A comment made in a rope line was taken out of context. I was talking about exporting that technology to China so when they burn their dirty coal, it won't be as dirty, it will be clean."

He was referring to this previous statement of his:

"We’re not supporting clean coal. Guess what? China’s building two every week, two dirty coal plants, and it’s polluting the United States. It’s causing people to die...No coal plants here in America. Build them if they’re going to build them over there."

I'm sorry, but I just don't see how Biden's explanation makes a lick of sense. He clearly stated unequivocally, "We’re not supporting clean coal...No coal plants here in America."

It was probably a gaffe, but he should just own up to it and not imply Palin misrepresented him.

Yes, palin has a tendency to get things on her mind out of teh way before answering questions directly, but in the beginning she did try to address the "deregulation" argument by Biden but she was cut off by the moderator:

BIDEN: The charge is absolutely not true. Barack Obama did not vote to raise taxes. The vote she's referring to, John McCain voted the exact same way. It was a budget procedural vote. John McCain voted the same way. It did not raise taxes. Number two, using the standard that the governor uses, John McCain voted 477 times to raise taxes. It's a bogus standard it but if you notice, Gwen, the governor did not answer the question about deregulation, did not answer the question of defending John McCain about not going along with the deregulation, letting Wall Street run wild. He did support deregulation almost across the board. That's why we got into so much trouble.

IFILL: Would you like to have an opportunity to answer that before we move on?

PALIN: I'm still on the tax thing because I want to correct you on that again. And I want to let you know what I did as a mayor and as a governor. And I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also. As mayor, every year I was in office I did reduce taxes. I eliminated personal property taxes and eliminated small business inventory taxes and as governor we suspended our state fuel tax. We did all of those things knowing that that is how our economy would be heated up. Now, as for John McCain's adherence to rules and regulations and pushing for even harder and tougher regulations, that is another thing that he is known for though. Look at the tobacco industry. Look at campaign finance reform...

Incidentally, the "fact check" squad suggests this was a disingenuous tactic for Biden to harp on McCain the "deregulator":

BIDEN: Complained about "economic policies of the last eight years" that led to "excessive deregulation."

THE FACTS: Biden voted for 1999 deregulation that liberal groups are blaming for part of the financial crisis today. The law allowed Wall Street investment banks to create the kind of mortgage-related securities at the core of the problem now. The law was widely backed by Republicans as well as by Democratic President Clinton, who argues it has stopped the crisis today from being worse.
