Commentary on Richard and GoodK's Debate

Post by _Brenton »

Well, something broke loose in the Soviet Union under Stalin and China under Mao. Clearly, some atheists do very bad things (as do some theists).

WOHOOOHOOO. :p
Religion is by far the killer of more people in the name of an ideology than anything. Especially Christianity.

The crusades. (millions)
The inqusitions. (millions)
etc,.

I realise this seems to be a two person dialogue, but I had to throw this in.

I'll bet Stalin, Mao, and Hitler each individually killed far more in the name of an ideology than all the religious wars/conflicts in history combined.

However, I will spot you the future on the account of Islam.

Hitler was a Christian, BC.

You know that.

But religion does not have to account for all the bad things religious people have done. Only all of the bad things done in the name of religion.

GoodK,

Hitler was NOT a Christian. He advocated a pre-Christian religion (was a big fan of Wagner).
Hitler’s private statements about Christianity were largely negative. Hitler’s intimates, Goebbels, Speer, and Bormann report many such statements, although the historical validity of some remarks has been questioned, particularly the collection called Table Talk. Although most historians consider it a useful source, some do not regard it as wholly reliable. Ian Kershaw makes clear the questionable nature of Table Talk as a source;[16] however, although Kershaw recommends treating the work with caution, he does not suggest dispensing with it altogether. The atheist historian Richard Carrier goes further, controversially contending that certain portions of Table Talk, especially those regarding Hitler's hatred of Christianity, are inventions. [17]

There is less controversy about other statements. Joseph Goebbels notes in a diary entry in 1939: "The Führer is deeply religious, but deeply anti-Christian. He regards Christianity as a symptom of decay." Albert Speer reports a similar statement: “You see, it’s been our misfortune to have the wrong religion. Why didn’t we have the religion of the Japanese, who regard sacrifice for the Fatherland as the highest good? The Mohammedan religion too would have been much more compatible to us than Christianity. Why did it have to be Christianity with its meekness and flabbiness?"[18][19] In the Hossbach Memorandum Hitler is recorded as saying that "only the disintegrating affect of Christianity, and the symptoms of age" were responsible for the demise of the Roman Empire.[20] In 1941, Hitler praised an anti-Christian tract from 362 AD, neo-platonist and pagan Roman emperor Julian the Apostate's Against the Galileans, saying "I really hadn't known how clearly a man like Julian had judged Christians and Christianity, one must read this..."[21]

Even in the belief system most reverential of life, Japanese Buddhists did horrible acts in conjunction with the cult of the Emperor.

He was a fan of some esoteric mysticism (Spear of Destiny stuff), Aryan mythology, the social hygiene theory and also liked listening to Wagner's Ring Cycle. But could he not have embraced Christianity with these variations?

Sorry, Bub, but atheists Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot killed more people than any Christian prince, pope, or potentate. (The first two alone killed 60,000,000 between them.)

Either a flagrant untruth or you're ignorant.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, this time.
