God Bless Barack Obama - Sarah Palin

Post by _beastie »

So, within a span of a couple of days, Sarah Palin is now blessing Barack Obama, after accusing him of "palling around with terrorists".

But she took an entirely different tone on Thursday, when she chastised reporters for asking her questions about her war with some staff members in the McCain campaign at such a heady time. “Barack Obama has been elected president,” Ms. Palin said. “Let us, let us — let him — be able to kind of savor this moment, one, and not let the pettiness of maybe internal workings of the campaign erode any of the recognition of this historic moment that we’re in. And God bless Barack Obama and his beautiful family.”

Sarah Palin a month ago:

“There is a lot of interest, I guess, in what I read and what I’ve read lately. Well, I was reading my copy of today’s New York Times and I was interested to read about Barack’s friends from Chicago.

“I get to bring this up not to pick a fight, but it was there in the New York Times, so we are gonna talk about it. Turns out one of Barack’s earliest supporters is a man who, according to the New York Times, and they are hardly ever wrong, was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that quote launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and US Capitol. Wow. These are the same guys who think patriotism is paying higher taxes.

“This is not a man who sees America as you see it and how I see America. We see America as the greatest force for good in this world. If we can be that beacon of light and hope for others who seek freedom and democracy and can live in a country that would allow intolerance in the equal rights that again our military men and women fight for and die for for all of us. Our opponent though, is someone who sees America it seems as being so imperfect that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country?”

You would think that people in this country would have bought a little clue long ago about how seriously politicians take their own attacks on opponents.

So, while I'm thrilled with Obama's election, and hope for the best, I, for one, certainly don't forget he is a politician, and the vast majority of politicians are whores and liars by nature.

And that obviously includes Sarah Palin.

I think she's cute.

beastie, Yah, I'm posting... yet, I saw your OP and immediately thought of the ramifications seen on the board between groups, so, I thought I'd post it here. :)

In election campaigns there is so much black and white thinking going on and often times candidates do tap into the electorates greatest fears (terrorism, Communism, etc...) and it's no wonder that after the elections that all these sentiments don't dissipate immediately if ever. There really is a culture war going on right now in this country and much of it, I believe, is because we demonize our opponents.

It's no wonder people really are fearful right now because Obama was elected. Personally I don't get too freaked out when any new president is elected. I'm more concerned about Congress. Yet, it's no wonder that as we amp up into a frenzy because of elections that some see a battle between the sides (good vs. evil) and people become terrified. You see the same thing happening now with the homosexual rights campaign and the religious -- both sides think they're being persecuted.

Yes, I absolutely agree with you, mon – I think Palin especially, and to a lesser but perhaps even more damaging extent because of his stature, McCain tried to dehumanize Obama. Just as the articles you linked demonstrate! I don’t think that it turned out to be true that a supported shouted “kill him” in a McCain rally, but there is no doubt they shouted out that Obama was a “terrorist” and “traitor” – both worthy of death.

Of course I’m not so naïve as to not realize that this sort of personal attack and dehumanization have occurred in probably every election, throughout the history of our country. It seems to be the nature of the beast. I doubt if any of our elections have approached the level of ugliness the election of 1800 attained, with the Federalists calling Jefferson a “howling atheist” and encouraged the electorate to hide their Bibles because Jefferson would confiscate them. Jefferson, in turn, said Adams was a “howling hermaphrodite” (hey, at least he was imaginative). So obviously there’s been no idyllic period of the past in which we debated policy alone, and refrained from personal attack. But I do think that the attacks of Palin and McCain were notched up in intensity – perhaps in reaction to their underdog status. As the article you linked stated, to call someone a friend of terrorists is to directly imply that person is worthy of death.

So I guess we will just pick up and go on, as we have largely in the past. But I do not believe it’s fair to absolve McCain due to his conciliatory concession speech, nor is it fair to absolve Palin due to her now stated desire to support Obama. They created a monster, and while they do seem to now be uncomfortable with the monster they created, it is their baby.

And Beastie I agree with you 110%!

I'm sorry. Did he not spend time with Rashid Khalili? Bill Ayers? Meet with the Islamic Society of North America??

B.O. got a major pass from the media (self-admitted). If he were on the other side meeting with these people he would have been crucified. That's a fact. And by fact I mean reality. And by reality I mean fact.

I’m sorry. Did McCain give Khalidi’s group half a million dollars? Why wasn’t he crucified?

So, do you think that Palin actually thinks that Obama “pals around with terrorists”? If she does, why does she call on God to bless him and his beautiful family? And does McCain actually believe Obama pals around with terrorists, too? If so, why has he encouraged his followers to support Obama?

WASHINGTON: The defeated Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been blamed by the Secret Service for provoking a spike in death threats against US President-elect Barack Obama.

During the bitter election campaign, the Alaskan governor had questioned Obama's patriotism and accused him of "palling around with terrorists", citing his links with the sixties radical William Ayers.

Palin's demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to plan attacks on the future president of the US.

More on Bill Ayers:
Bill Ayers and Barack Obama at one time lived in the same neighborhood in the city of Chicago, and both had worked on education reform in the state of Illinois. The two met "at a luncheon meeting about school reform."[46] Obama was named to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge Project Board of Directors to oversee the distribution of grants in Chicago. Later in 1995, Ayers hosted "a coffee" for "Mr. Obama's first run for office."[46] The two served on the board of a community anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 2000 and 2002, during which time the board met 12 times.[46] In April 2001, Ayers contributed $200 to Obama's re-election fund to the Illinois State Senate.[47] Since 2002, there has been little linking Obama and Ayers.[46] Obama said in September 2008 that he hadn't "seen him in a year-and-a-half."[48] In February 2008, Obama spokesman Bill Burton released a statement from the senator about the relationship between the two: "Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous."[47]CNN's review of project records found nothing to suggest anything inappropriate in the non-profit projects in which the two men were involved.[49] Internal reviews by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time magazine, The Chicago Sun-Times, The New Yorker and The New Republic "have said that their reporting does not support the idea that Obama and Ayers had a close relationship".[50] William C. Ibershof, the lead federal prosecutor of the Weather Underground case has stated, "I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child."[51]
