MDB Top 10 Albums of 2008
So, it's getting close to the end of the year and websites and magazines and TV entertainment programs are going to start putting up best-of lists. I think it would be interesting to get a feel for our posters' tastes by doing something similar. This will be the top ten albums thread. Post your top 10 favorite albums of the year, numbering them from 1 to 10 (1 being your absolute favorite-est). You can explain your choices, if you wish, or you can simply name them. If you can't think of 10, post however many you want...just don't exceed 10. The only other rule is that they have to be from 2008. Cool? Let's start with mine:
10. Gus Black--Today Is Not The Day
9. The Weakerthans--Reunion Tour
8. Delta Spirit--Ode To Sunshine
7. Kings of Leon--Only By The Night
6. The Whigs--Mission Control
5. Elbow--The Seldom Seen Kid
4. Blitzen Trapper--Furr
3. Mark Geary--Opium
2. Frightened Rabbit--The Midnight Organ Fight
1. Spiritualized--Songs In A&E

Thanks for saying that, The Dude. I thought I was the only one who had never heard of any of those bands.

Once I started writing and playing music, I really got into listening to all kinds of stuff. I go to lots of concerts. I have a bunch of friends that are always recommending stuff. That's probably why my list seems obscure to some. But, that's not the point. I know you guys listen to music...post a few of your favorite albums from this year...or your favorite songs even. For example: Coldplay's new album, Viva La Vida, didn't make my list but it's pretty damn good. It's up for some Grammys. Surely someone has Coldplay on their list. Or Radiohead. Or the new Guns 'N Roses. Or Beyonce. Or Tim McGraw.

1. Def Leppard--Songs from the Sparkle Lounge
That's the only album I bought that was released in 2008.

Nice. Thanks for participating Shades. I know there are others here who listen to lots of music (see Jukebox thread): Steuss, cks, LOAP, KA, Gaz, and others. Let's see those lists!

Re: MDB Top 10 Albums of 2008
I realized I can't think of too many new CDs I really liked this year.
Kings of Leon, Only by the Night. Just excellent stuff.
Vampire Weekend. I know, but it's just so damn catchy.
The Walkmen, You & Me. Kinda odd stuff, but I like it.
I'll think of something else later.

Re: MDB Top 10 Albums of 2008
The only really new new music I think I've listened to recently is the new Fall album...lots of new to me stuff, though, since I've been exploring the archival glories of back catalog via the magic of technology. My biggest gem is the odd guitar-accompanied version of Jimmy Webb singing "Galveston." It's odd because the self-accompaniment on piano version is all you ever usually here, and odd because of the strange, spare, and clanging intro, almost industrial in its dissonance. Earlier in the year I got into Ghostland Observatory and "Im Bruges" gave me the classic "Raglan Road" by Luke Kelly and the Dubliners. I've also been listening to some old Stevie Wonder and Bobby Womack. And seeing The Wedding Present live, made me go back through their stuff. I did a tour of Galaxie 500/Luna and Townes Van Zandt earlier in the year as a spin off from biographies I'd read. Still love Galaxie 500/early Luna, but mostly really like covers of Van Zandt by other people.
I like that Mark Geary made your list, SK, he's sweet live and brother to one of the best looking men on the planet. I like most of the stuff on your list ok, but nothing there I'm passionate about. Well, I kind of don't like Kings of Leon, but its just because that one guy in the band looks too elfin for my tastes.

I like the new Walkmen CD a lot, as well. When I was at SXSW, Vampire Weekend was the biggest draw. All the venues they played at were packed. I love the Oxford Comma song.

Me too. When I saw Steve Earle a few months ago, he told some cool Townes stories and played a couple of covers. Great stuff.

Those dudes from Kings of Leon wear some really tight jeans. Image wise, they're one of those bands I should hate, but I really like some of their songs. And Mark Geary is rad.

Re: MDB Top 10 Albums of 2008
Hmmm...here are some CD's that I've enjoyed this year, in no particular order:

McFly, Radioactive
(British power-pop band, "One For the Radio" is my favorite pop song of the year)

Barenaked Ladies, Snacktime
(It's all "kid's" music."Crazy ABC's" is hilarious)

Nick Cave (Composer), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Probably my favorite score of the year.

Weezer, Red Album,
"The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" is the best pop song based on a Shaker hymn ever.

Brad Paisley, Play
Cinepro's a little bit country ;) I blame my mission to the southern states.

The Script, Script
"Man Who Can't Be Moved" is another favorite song.

Thomas Newman, Wall-E Soundtrack
I love Pixar movies, and their soundtracks. And I even like "Hello Dolly", so this was like a bonus.
Since I listen to singles more than albums anyway, here are singles I've liked without checking out the whole album:
Noah and the Whale, 5 Years Time
Flobots, Handlebars
The Killers, Human
Jessie Farrell, I Guess (Country
