Re: MDB Top 10 Albums of 2008
I haven’t followed new music much this year. I mostly spent my time playing catch-up and listening to albums of the past. But, a few albums from this year that have graced my stereo (that I really enjoyed):
TV on the Radio – “Dear Science”
Portishead – “Third”
The Hold Steady – “Stay Positive”

In 2007 I really was into Gomez. Since then I haven't listened to any new music, or gone to any shows this year, or even bought an album on itunes. Seriously, I've had the same crappy music on my ipod for a whole year. Geez, I guess 2008 was the year I turned into an old fart.

The only 2 albums in my collection I even thought were released this year turned out to be from 2007 (Against Me!'s "New Wave" and Gogol Bordello's "Super Taranta!"). 2008 was a lame year in music for me, although Airborne Toxic Event is starting to grow on me a little, even though I hate indie rock.

Bubble Gum Years is probably in my top 100 favorite songs of all time. I don't know why, but the first time I heard the line "Whiskey bottle and a .45, my dear..." I fell in love.

I've never listened to Airborne Toxic Event, but any band that gets their name from a Don DeLillo novel is okay by me.

That Hold Steady album is amazing. I'm finally getting into them and I'm really liking what I hear. They kind of remind me of Lucero. I like TVOTR's Dear Science, but not as much as Cookie Mountain. I prefer the droney to the dancy.

I like Boys and Girls in America better. I'm not sure if it's because the album is better, or if it's because of the natural nostalgic value that's inherent when a particular album was your introduction to a given group (make sense?... no?... smoke somethin').

I got Boys and Girls and Stay Positive at the same time and I also prefer Boys and Girls. It's weird, the first Hold Steady song I heard was a cover of You Can Make Him Like You by Jesse Malin. That's what got me hooked.
You don't have to deal with the dealers...let your boyfriend deal with the dealers. It only gets inconvenient when you wanna get high alone.

Belay my last. I just realized "Float" by Flogging Molly was released this year, and I totally dig it.

Check out their song "Sometime Around Midnight". That's the one all the kids are listening to.
I've never read Don DeLillo, but any author who inspires Airborne Toxic Event is okay by me.

These are some of the [English-language] works I've acquired this year that get a fair amount of play time.
Adele - 19
Duffy - Rockferry
Coldplay - Viva la Vida
Russian Red - I Love Your Glasses
Lenka - Lenka
Not cutting edge, I suppose, but it's what I like.
