Ice Storms

Post by _KimberlyAnn »

Last year, we had ice storms here in Oklahoma that left my family without electricity for over four days. No heat, no hot water, no way to cook, other than over the fire in the fireplace; it was a real pioneer experience for us. Additionally, the ice destroyed several of my beautiful trees, part of my roof, the guttering around the house, the fence, the girls' playhouse, the net and liner around the trampoline, and a tree fell on our basketball goal, destroying our backboard. My car was dented by falling branches. Ugh.

It looks like that may happen again. We're iced in, and our electricity keeps going off and on, off and on. I've got everything ready just in case. So, if I disappear for a while and don't respond to my current posts or PM's, then know I'm huddled around the fireplace with my girls, cooking in a dutch oven and trying to stay warm and keep the kids as entertained as possible. Lots of reading and game playing, while there is light, at least.

Hopefully, we'll have electricity, but it's not looking good at the moment.

Ice storms are no fun. We went through a similar experience here in NC a few years ago.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully, the electricity will stay on!

The electricity went off last night for a while, probably a few hours. Long enough for it to get cold, but not terribly so. It's back on now and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way, but the icy rain is still falling and freezing onto everything it touches.

But worst of all, school has already been canceled for the next two days! A couple of the moms on my block work, so guess where their kiddos are right now? At my house. Also, my beloved Mormon neighbor asked if her kids could come over because they were begging to play Wii with the other kids on the street. I adore those kids, so of course they're here, too.

It's so loud and wild in my house! I'm getting ready to make many, many pizzas for lunch. It's like a mini Chuckee Cheese up in here! Why can't the kids ice skate to school???

Pizza sounds like a good choice!

Sometimes when the kids are occupied, it's noisy, but easier to get a few things done. Hang in there!

You have more patience than I would with the witchy Mormon Mom.

Isn't she the one who said you were supposedly evil? And now, since it's convenient for her, her kids can play at your house? What a bitch!

You're a good person to put up with that crap. I know you feel like you're up against a rock and a hard place because you like the kids.

I agree with liz. Isn't this the neighbor who said that she feels an oppressive feeling of evil whenever she looks at your house?

If so, you should've reminded her of that and refused to let her kids come over since you don't want them corrupted by evil.

We're in the ice here. Probably an inch on my car at the moment.

Big ice storm with freezing sleet predicted for overnight and most of tomorrow. I doubt we'll get power outages, it will just be a case of being really crappy to get around. I hope it doesn't happen because I really want to teach my film class tomorrow.

Sitting here listening to limbs and trees go down in the near vicinity due to the ice...not good.

Liz and Shades,

Actually, I wasn't being facetious when I called my Mormon neighbor "beloved." When I left the Mormon church, she did tell me my house was shrouded in a dark sinister cloud of evil and that she couldn't bear to look at it. At the time, her husband was out of work and I was anonymously giving them substantial gift cards to help with groceries. She thought ward members were giving the money to her, but I've never told her otherwise.

Eventually, she changed her tune, and it was because she needed babysitting, but that's alright. She hasn't apologized, but has been friendly to me. I love her kids. I've known three of them since birth, and they've been at my house nearly every day since! I'm just glad we're all on good terms now. My Mormon neighbors, the whole family, are definitely beloved by me.

Still iced in,
