Are you saying that the ceremony itself (wording, stage direction, etc...) was given directly from God? I thought it was an additional way to worship and feel closer to God through an adaptation in the Masonic format.
Hi, I'm brand new to this board and have only been a lurker here for a couple of hours. I'm also registered at the MAD board, but feel somewhat ignored. Maybe I don't have the hang of it, not sure. Anyway, I was in shock when I first went through in 1982. I was faithful and attended often, studied the symbolism in the Old Testament and actually thought I getting somewhere with the particular ways in which animals were sacrifices for the sins of the person who offered up the sacrifice. I think you all know what I mean. If not, I can go on later. Anyway, so after I really thought I had a grasp and made the connections they changed the ceremony, no penalties. The only other things I loved was the 5 points of fellowship. I thought it was nice to feel like I was embraced by God while communicating to him.
Last thing. We have an aversion to the word "secret" because of its associated meaning with "secret combinations" which are taught to be abominations before God, and because the endowment ceremony certainly in the time it was starting to be practiced, very much was a secret combination (in my opinion).

I hated it, except when the person on the other side was my soon to be husband. It always felt creepy, like some old guy was breathing down my neck.

Unfortunately therein lies the problem, the secret combinations of which you speak are also well known because of their associated blood oaths.

Welcome JustDreamin. Whatever you do, don't try the secret combination 54R-10L-36R or you may open some guy's gym locker by mistake. If it can happen to Captain Morgan, it can happen to anybody.

I never did any after I did my own. I'm not sure I ever even thought about doing them. hum

In the days of Brigham Young the apron of Lucifer was a Masonic apron, and the actors even identified it as the "apron of a Master Mason"; which has, I believe, a blue or purple trim. Sometime before the 1950s, Lucifer's apron was changed to a all-purple one with no markings.

I agree with an earlier topic I have read that I would like to see Satans apron from the 1950/60's. It had actual symbols of his 'powers & priesthoods' on it. This one was not the Masonic apron. I had one of those and it was different.
I don't know why people get so worked up about the temple.
There's nothing weirder about Mormon temple ceremonies than first communion or any other sacred ceremony in another religion.
I suppose one explanation is that we behave so privately. For all intent and purposes, there's nothing secret about the ceremonies. A google search will probably provide you with everything you could possibly want to know and more about the super-secret going-ons of a Mormon temple.
There's nothing weird about the temple. Except for the fact that a size 34 waist feels like a size 30.
