I'm sure Evangelical would come from the word euangellion; eua-good or well, ngellion spell/message. So maybe, marked by being a messenger of good news a.k.a. the gospel.

An evangelical is a Christian who emphasizes the need to recognize one's sins and be 'born again.' The importance they place on conversion of the individual heart and mind also implies an advocacy for missions. They can be present in any denomination.

A Christian fundamentalist usually denotes an evangelical who 'militantly' opposites the basic predicates of secular society, or as Falwell defined it, "An evangelical who is angry about something" and acts on that anger through political activism. They tend to subscribe to a dispensationalist eschatology and oppose emotional justifications for belief in favor of a version of common sense rationality that has strong historical roots in American culture, yet predates the Darwinian revolution (i.e. Baconian science).

Both adhere to a strict scripture based form of godliness that denies the power thereof in actual practice, though not in word.

You might as well add Mormon to the list these days as they exclusively favor the same basis of a strict form of godliness and deny the power thereof in practice, though not in word.

As a Mormon, I would say that a fundamentalist is anybody who is more literal than us.

The term was born from The Dallas Theological Seminary days when they taught dispensationalism. I note that only as a frame of reference.

A christian fundamentalis is one who believes the fundamentals are necessary for a full Christian experience. You may call it orthodoxy.

You might be surprised to know that fundies regard conservative catholics as fundies - while some baptists are not.
