Changes in LDS Doctrine?

Post by _Joseph »

A high council speaker recently stood before the congregation and stated "Doctrine never changes, it is forever".

What LDS "Doctrine" has seen changes from Joesph Smith's teaching to what we see in LDSinc today?'

I thought this had been asked and answered a number of times but running a search a few times, it does not show up.

I think mostly the hich council man is speaking out of ignorance. I guess if you really wanted to you could stretch what he means by doctrine and skew it to somehow fit what he is trying to say. But what he is spouting off is going to be wildly misinterprated or he is just plain wrong himself.

Honestly you can pick any possible topic and it has been changed.

Priesthood, blessings, discipline, Bible or Book of Mormon history, Joeseph Smith and his experiance/revelation. Really just pick anything about the church, trace it back to Joe Smith and its different.

Girls were allowed to give blessings via laying on of hands back in Joe's time, now they aren't. The temple cermony has been changed in wording dramatically and in practice (the rituals you actually perform). Word of Wisdom interpretation has been changed. Contraceptives, homosexuality, etc...

Then of course there is the obvious stuff like blacks and the priesthood, polygamy... anyway were you looking for something in particular?

I would like a list to give to the Bishop. What brought this up was one member we know well and talk with who has asked to be released from a teaching calling. They will not teach what the manual says because it does not agree with what they found when checking out the references and from LDS resource material. As a result they met with the Bishop and he has them still teaching without having to stick to the manual. A meeting will be set up with the Stake President on this. They would like more of a list of 'changed doctrines' to have as a reference. Something more complete than the three areas that have given problems in preparing lessons that are accurate and complete.

That is the reason I am looking. Having a list compiled by a number of people will allow more time for this person to prepare and do some looking to find the references from 'approved' or even 'formerly approved' materials, including former teaching materials put out by LDSinc. Both of us feel that after the Stake President is asked to come to discuss things the teacher will just be released, no real discussion will happen. We'll see,

For hells sakes you numnut, I WAS IN THE DAMN MEETING. I won't be respectful to some jerkoff who insinuates that I may be lying. You must be a low type to believe all who post don't have knowledge or personal experience when doing so. It is usually the criminal types who look for dishonesty in others.

So, if the mods want to move this to a lower kingdom please do so.

Do you have any examples where it was officially mandated by the Church then that "girls were allowed to give blessings" then, and where it is officially mandated by the Church that they can not now? Making controversial statements such as these and not bringing forth proof to back them up is poor rhetoric.

Can you provide the "official mandate" that denies women the priesthood?

Can you provide the "official mandate" that denied black women the right to enter the temple and explain why they would be denied if women do not have the priesthood?

Can you explain why women wear the "garment of the HOLY PRIESTHOOD?"

Can you explain why women officiate in temple PRIESTHOOD ORDINANCES and by what power and authority they do so? Is there an "official mandate" about women being allowed this priesthood function?

Can you explain why Emma Smith was ORDAINED to her position as President of the Relief Society?

Why did Joseph Smith give/turn keys to the Relief Society and tell them he was going to make the society a "kingdom of priests"?

The New Testament (and Old Testament) have examples of women who were in positions of power and authority in a religious capacity. (Phoebe=deacon; Deborah=Judge in Isreal; Junia=Apostle)

Here are a few early quotes about women having the priesthood:
In 1843 Patriarch Hyrum Smith blessed Leonora Cannon Taylor:

“You shall be blesst with your portion of the Priesthood which belongeth to you, that you may be set apart for you Anointing and your induement [endowment].

- Hyrum Smith patriarchal blessing to Leonora Taylor, July 28, 1843, LDS archives; see Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power, p. 36

Patriarch Joseph Young blessed Brigham Young’s daughter Zina Young Card:

“These blessings are yours, the blessings and power according to the holy Melchisedek Priesthood you received in your Endowments, and you shall have them.”

- Joseph Young (member of Seventy and Council of Fifty) to Zina Young Card, May 28, 1878, in Special Collections and Manuscripts Department, Lee Library; see Quinn, The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power, p. 36

“Now, brethren, the man that honors his Priesthood, the woman that honors her Priesthood, will receive an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of God.”

- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 17, p. 119

Obviously the modern church does not allow women to exercise their power and authority. The modern church plays that women do not and never have held the priesthood. The teaching/doctrine has CHANGED which is the theme of this thread.

Do you believe in these words of wisdom?

"Without a clearly defined belief, the religious feeling would not only be worthless for the purposes of human existence but even might contribute towards a general disorganization, on account of its vague and multifarious tendencies".

Do you know who stated this?

emilysmith you win the prize!

And although Hitler was probably the worst man in the history of the world, does this statement really stand as true?

Can a religion successfully exist without a real clear defined doctrine that does not change?

I am searching for the clearly defined doctrine of the LDS church as given by Prophets and not apologists, but must turn to the apologists to ask where this clearly defined doctrine exists.

Re "a list to the bishop." The list might be more valuable sent to the HCM directly CC to the Stake President. It's not kind to not tell one their zipper is down and they are exposing themselves.
The HCM is also on a learning-curve. Help the poor soul. It's your Christian duty.
Read, "The Good Samaritan" story. Matters not whether it's true, it's a story with great moral. Do the guy a favour :-)
