Perhaps Rigdon had read it, and used the ideas to get someone else (Joseph Smith) to take credit for the writing of the book. Personally, the book has so much Satanic imagery, that I have some personal bias against making any conclusions. There are even some parts I did not cut-and-paste that make the linkage stronger. I really have some bias, conceptualizing Satan as the deceiver. I just don't like the image of the horns, tail, and pitchfork that one sees in horror movies.Joseph didn't actually have access to the book (in either it's original German or in translation) but became aware of its contents through others.
I am biased in my study of the Book of Mormon and its writing!! LOL!
ETA Hoffman was a very well-known writer and musician. The Nutcracker was developed from one of his stories. Germans in pre-Nazi times might have been impressed by the parallels of the stories surrounding the writing of the Book of Mormon and the story of the Golden Pot, and thought that it was not available in the US. Early Nazis were also very interested in the occult and automatic writing. Hmmmmnnn. Very interesting.
I'm going to wait until later to take another gleaning pass at it. Right now I am reading an interesting book on the psychology of second language acquisition.
