Re: WOW Takes Another Hit: Coffee and Prostate Cancer
Hello,
When I first saw "WOW" I thought this had something to do with Mr. The Nehor and The World of Warcraft! Oh my!
That said, I would like Mr. Jskains to address the Hot Vs. Cold drink controversies that led to the Mormon church outlawing "Hot Drinks".

Doctor Scratch wrote:What's strange about your commentary on this thread, Josh, is that you seem inconsistent in your reliance on science vs. your reliance on a certain interpretation of the WoW. I.e., you're more than happy to nod in assent to studies that support your BY-influenced view on the WoW, but you erupt with jejune indignation at any studies that undercut the sillier aspects of the doctrine.
All of this is to say, Why bother citing any studies at all? Why not just say that you distrust all of it and that you prefer to rely strictly on your testimony?

When heath codes get embedded in religion they will always be subject to antiquation when health science understanding improves and moves on from previously erroneous understandings.

Sounds like great spiritual advice to me!

Does anyone know of someone who died due to drinking too much coffee? How about someone who had health issues due to drinking coffee?
I'm the apostate your bishop warned you about.

An epidemiologist would tell you that this (healthy Utah Mormons) effect is mainly due to relatively low prevalence of smoking and tobacco use in observant Mormon populations, an assertion with which I think we could all agree.
Proscription of tobacco use by humans and sparing use of meat were about the only things that Joseph Smith got right in the WoW, which came from emerging popular beliefs on human diet at the time. In terms of the inspiration a prophesy of the WoW, one could do as well by simply flipping a coin.

No, that is not true. It's so far from common knowledge I can hardly believe that even you make this claim.

Invasion? Have you been talking to ajax18 about the settling of Louisiana and the history of Spain? Or are you speaking historically about the invasion of Mormon emigrants into the land of the Ute, Diné, Paiute, Goshute and Shoshoni?

What are you talking about? Wine has a significantly higher alcohol content than beers and ales, making it a "strong" drink as opposed to Beers and Ales, being "mild" barley drinks that were originally not banned.
Beer can have a content of around 4% while Wine can have a content of around 15%. That's a pretty big difference.Invasion? I worded it wrong. I was talking about the non-LDS invasion of Utah.

This statement is not a comparison between wine and beer. Those liquors generally classified as "spirits" are much, much stronger than wine. Wine is not "one of the strongest drinks out there." I appreciate that you were trying to talk about what might have been the original intent of the WoW, but in doing so you made this silly claim. You did not say that wine is generally stronger than beer, but that it is "one of the strongest drinks out there."
You tend to throw statements and sentences around with abandon. The connections that might be in your head aren't making it to the screen.
While there are constant demographic shifts in the population, it is quite contentious to claim that Utah has been "invaded" by non-LDS. Utah has never been a mormon-only area. It has a pretty rich history.
