I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

What you say is essentially true, as far as it's translated correctly. You might try posting this description of Mormon Discussions at the Selective Dialogue board just to see if everyone can keep a straight face.

Can we not agree that at least 2/3 of the Book of Mormon is baloney? A bunch of people slaying a bunch of more people, yada yada yada. The nuts and bolts don't really occur in the first part. There is something valuable in Mosiah, where social justice is concerned, but most Mormons aren't smart enough to pick up on it. My 88 year old dad has read it more times than I care to admit, and readily concurs that the just of the book really isn't about all the fighting, and the verily verilies, but about how one should live one's life. And even some of that is suspect.

...and that the other third has been copied from the Bible.

Interestingly the moral of First Nephi seems to be that it's okay to break the commandments as long as you can point to doing God's will.

Nephi:
Killed a defenseless man
Lied to the deceaseds servant
Stole a set of plates that belonged to the deceased
Coerced with menaces the deceaseds servant

But that's okay because God needed Nephi to have the plates even though he wasn't going to use them again. Ever.

That seems unequal - try robbing a bank and telling your Bishop that God told you to do it.

Also...

The moral of the stripling warriors seems to be that if you have the Lord on your side you won't be killed. Injured maybe, but you'll definitely survive.
Kind of makes it hard to explain why Mormon Soldiers and Mormon Missionaries currently get killed...
'Church pictures are not always accurate' (The Nehor May 4th 2011)

Morality is doing what is right, regardless of what you are told.
Religion is doing what you are told, regardless of what is right.
