Re: Inoculation Theory and Mormon Apologetics
I think the value of inoculation for us Mormons can be found in learning the accurate history of the Church, so we are not caught by surprise when history clashes with legend. What has been described in the opening post is rather an anti-inoculation which will keep many members vulnerable when exposed to history books and the internet.

J. Reuben Clark (the gift that keeps on giving) believed that certain aspects of Church history should be concealed so as to protect the Church from public embarrassment.

The church actually seems to have its own inoculation program. The current LDS Church policy and implementation of Inoculation Theory (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inoculation_theory) focuses on preparing members in such a way that the members see the statements made by critics of Mormon claims through the filters they have put in place. They have a set of controls placed inside the members mind and tell them how to recognize, what is "good", what is "bad" and what is "suspicious". Through this process and these filters members are conditioned to respond to truth and facts which contradict the "official" claims of the LDS Church...........

false premises, misleading conjecture, and overall a quite boring read.
got anything with substance and/or factual support? citations posted at the end of flawed conclusions doth support not make.
Your concluding diatribe exposes the pleadings of an intellectually desperate criticism. Let me ask you questions in a similar manner...
How does it feel to witness the LDS church getting more mainstream publicity?, achieving more political exposure and power? and ultimately being a considerable force in the shaping of the entire religious landscape of the future?

sub, I suggest you start a seperate thread if you want to talk about the issues with The Book of Mormon...

Re: Inoculation Theory and Mormon Apologetics
I wonder how someone can determine that a book is "anti-mormon" without reading it - and be sure of being right?
I think that there are likely lots of examples in which cursory examination would establish the judgement - apologists and critics seem to agree on some of these. However, that is not always the case.
True story: (one that I have told before, so if you recognise it I won't be offended that you don't read all the way to the end).
In the PBS Special on The Mormons, one of the people interviewed talked about how Joseph Smith used a rock in a hat during the translation of the Book of Mormon.
An elderly sister in my ward (long-term member, frequent holder of ward and stake positions) complained to me - along the lines of why such an evil anti-Mormon person was allowed to tell such terrible lies about the Prophet. She was outraged that he was allowed to get away with it.
The speaker was none other than our late-lamented "seething cauldron of hate" - Professor Daniel C Peterson. [lamented because of his departure from the board, not from this world]
I didn't tell the sister that the speaker was a BYU professor, and a prominent apologist for the church - I didn't want to be the one to burst her bubble.
Several years ago I mentioned that incident in a discussion either here or on the other board. DCP jumped in to refute the claim (which I didn't make) that his involvement in apologetics has damaged testimonies. I was able to reassure him that my friend's testimony of the church was not damaged one little bit - the problem she had was with DCP only!
Do members need to be inoculated against the criticisms, and against the apologists? - inoculated against the inoculations? (;=)

It was a bit before my time. I think I have come across parts of it online, but it looks dated and quite ridiculous to be honest. It seems so weak that it would be easy to refute it. It is the kind of weak attack that I bet Mormons thrived on.
I think this is the only good thing to have come of it:
