The 'right' kind of Mormon...
When Joseph Smith died there was a leadership crisis.
No contingency planning had been properly done etc etc.
So, the Church fragmented into a number of sects.
How do you know that the Brighamite sect was the right one?

Proof by being the most popular?
How do we know that the fundies weren't right when they split out at the end of polygamy?
So many questions....

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Because my ancestor said he saw the mantle of Joseph fall on Brigham, and he even looked and sounded like the prophet. Of course... my ancestor was also a polygamist, and so it was in his best interest to follow Brigham, but that is beside the point.

Sub,
Are you saying that those who split away at various points failed at Moroni's challenge?

And in the early succession crisis, it was James Strang that produced a translation of new plates to read and pray about.

Mike, I once got into an online debate with an apologist about that story. He claimed his ancestor had recorded the "changing of Brigham into Joseph" miracle in his journal at the time of the incident. I told him I thought the earliest primary accounts of that event were years later. Did your ancestor record the event at the time it occurred? Do you know when the earliest first-person eyewitness account was written (that we still have today)?

Orson Hyde recorded a first person account.
it was not only the voice of Joseph Smith but there were the features, the gestures and even the stature of Joseph before us in the person of Brigham...
Now if only Hyde had actually been in Nauvoo at the time.
The Mormon Hierarchy Origins of Power D Michael Quinn Pg 166-167 talks about the transfiguration. There were a few contemporary accounts. The footnotes for this section are especially helpful.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."
